How to begin

I'm willing to spend a couple of hundred dollars on materials and as
much time, study, and work as needed. I know that I want to do begin
producing solar power for myself and that I'd like to start off with a
smaller project, preferably one that can logically expand into
something more ambitious later or at least be helpful in understanding
the fundamental concepts about solar energy. Any sites, groups,
projects, suggestions or resources about how to get started with solar
energy would be much appreciated.
