RADIO

A while back, we were considering doing a big radio-themed edition,
with the main project being a multi-part radio show that really
explored the medium and fooled around with some soundscape projects.

For instance: Scenes from a movie that doesn't exist

A movie soundtrack for a chase scene or a romantic stroll down the
beach (be more creative than this), with the catch being that there is
no actual video to work with. The musician would have to evoke some
storyline with the music alone.

There are a lot a lot of possibilities for this. One question would be
how to present. Of course we will build a pirate radio station and
broadcast illegally, risking life and liberty and reputation. But on
the actual site, should we break the pieces up on different pages as
well as have one streamlined show on the mainpage? This would allow
use of other mediums, like photos and stuff for the site.

Other ideas:

A radio drama - complete with roiling metal sheets for thunder and
creaking doors

A call in: post an ad on Craigslist with a number for people to call
into a one-time only radio show. Have a charismatic person take
questions and discuss things with them. All recorded on air.
Preferably this show would have some theme or direction.

A proper radio profile / radio "this island earth" from afar ...

Visits to places - recording everything inside a place and then
editing it down to the elements. What sounds make up a place?

Thoughts?

It has also been suggested that we do a WATER themed edition

Let me know if anyone has thoughts on that, too.

We'd discussed some of these projects:

A map of the water table of the city - perhaps with some photography
and dispatches from the underground streams
I think it could be cool to put together a slideshow of Konrad
Fiedler's disaster water photographs that he has accumulated over the
years (floods, storms, etc).

Also, a close reading of the recent The World Without Us book, which
details how quickly the city's subways would flood if we didn't power
a network of pumps for even a single day.

For my part, I'd be interested in writing an essay about Zygmunt
Bauman and his "liquid" series
Maybe even make it into an interview with him - I'd love the excuse

As well as evoking golden age radio, it could be cool to do something related to ham radio. Could we actually make one and start an NYMoon handle? It could be another way to contact us, replacing our late, great voicemail.

As far as golden age stuff, it'd be great to have a part of the broadcast be a doleful sounding British woman reading a series of numbers that form a cryptogram. Then we can make decoder rings!
