A MESSAGE FROM AMBIT CEO AND COFOUNDER JERE THOMPSON
2/28/2008
Dear Ambit Consultants,
The price of natural gas rose almost every single day from late
January through mid-March. It is up over 30% since the beginning of
the year. How will this affect you and Ambit?
Well, just as the price of oil drives the cost of gasoline, the price
of natural gas drives the cost of electricity. The shock wave from
this rise in natural gas prices has already impacted the wholesale
cost of electricity in Texas, and as that cost goes up, the retail
price for electricity must rise as well.
Every major Texas competitor has raised their rates over the past few
weeks while we have been watching and waiting. Our strategy during
this period is simple. When raising rates, we will be a slow follower.
We’ll let others raise their rates first. When lowering rates, we will
be a leader. We intend to always price beneath the incumbent and
within the bottom half of our real competitors. Quite frankly, there
are prices being offered by some competitors today that make
absolutely no sense given the current wholesale cost of electricity.
Either those prices will soon go away or those competitors will go
away. And it will probably be a little of both.
Now, however, it is time for Ambit to respond. Today, I’d like to
introduce a new month-to-month plan in Texas, Lone Star Select. This
new plan will offer rates ranging from 12.99 cents to 13.49 cents per
kWh and will offer savings below incumbent summer rates ranging from
10% to 20%. Ambit Certified Green will be re-priced as low as 13.99
cents, and our stalwart Heart of Texas plan will be re-priced as low
as 13.54 cents. When you check in to PowerZone and our websites next
Tuesday, April 1st, you’ll find all the tools you need to offer these
plans – Lone Star Select, Ambit Certified Green, and Heart of Texas.
These are great plans!
You still have 3 days left, until next Tuesday, to get your customers
on Lone Star Gold month-to-month for as low as 9.9 cents. That
introductory rate will be in effect for at least 30 days for any new
customer who enrolls in the Lone Star Gold month-to-month plan before
midnight on Monday. So make it a personal challenge to gather as many
customers as you can before the new rates go into effect!
No one likes to see price increases, but the good news is that Ambit
is fortunate to have a great relationship with Shell Energy Trading.
We are well-positioned to navigate the coming storm. Consequently, you
are well positioned, too. Ambit will always make prudent decisions
that are in your long-term best interests. We will not take wild
market risks that might jeopardize your businesses.
Thank you for all that you do. We will always be here to support you
and make you proud.
Sincerely,
Jere Thompson
