Glad to say that a new bridge over the Mass Pike, along with a new rail transit station, is now being proposed as a design option as part of the Newton Corner Mass DOT project. I've advocated for this for a very long time! The rail station has been in Newton's
Comprehensive Plan since 2007. Please see attached letter that I sent last year and also a sketch that is one of the design options now being considered, which is Alternative 3.
Actually, most of the alternatives (3 out of 5) include the bridge concept, which will provide a much safer and more direct route for pedestrians and bicyclists to navigate this intersection. I am also very pleased to see that birectional traffic flow is being
considered, which was another one of my earlier recommendations.
Alternative 6 basically suggests that the West Newton turnpike intersection should become what is now in Newton Corner, and I'm pretty sure that option will be dismissed quickly!
These alternatives will be an item of discussion at the DOT meeting this Tuesday afternoon,
March 31, starting at 4 pm.
I hope that Ned Codd speaks to support Alternative 3. The new bridge across the Pike and the new rail station will finally help people reconnect across Newton Corner and will improve auto, bicycle, pedestrian, and transit access.
There is quite a bit of support for this option across the community, including the Newton Corner Neighborhood Association. I will be glad to advocate for this from the perspective of improved bicycle safety and accessibility.
It would be good to gain as much support as possible for Alternative 3 to move this forward. Once a primary option is selected, then "add-ons" may be possible, like a better bike path to the Charles River and a green space over the pike as noted in Alternative
5. I think we need more clarity from the DOT about their intentions for Russell Road, which seems to be a path towards the Charles River.
All the best,
Srdj
Hi - I'd love to hear thoughts on these draft alternatives for NC MassDot just sent out. Unless I'm missing something, none of them seem to have easy bike access to the Charles River. The shared path seems to end at Russell Road - is Russell a private road?
