Between Monday, February 20th and Wednesday February 23rd, the Newton
Police Department investigated several reports of burglaries to motor
vehicles. Numerous Town residents reported that their vehicles were
entered into and that personal items were stolen from inside their
vehicles. All of the vehicles were unlocked and the burglaries
occurred during the overnight hours. Video surveillance from the
surrounding areas where the burglaries were reported showed an
individual walking around the area and checking the door handles of
various vehicles.
Detectives were able to identify the suspect as Jason K. Corey, a 30
year old male from Wantage, NJ. On Wednesday, February 23rd, Corey
was located at the Brookside Terrace Apartments on Mill Street in
Newton and brought to the station for questioning. Corey was
subsequently charged with the following:
• 5 counts of Burglary, N.J.S. 2C:18-2a(1)., a Third Degree Crime
• 2 counts of Theft of Movable Property, N.J.S. 2C:20-3a., a Fourth
Degree Crime
• 2 counts of Theft of Movable Property, N.J.S. 2C:20-3a., a
Disorderly Persons Offense
Corey was lodged in the Sussex County Jail. Bail was set at
$35,000.00 with no 10% option by Judge John E. Mulhern, JMC. The
burglaries were investigated by members of the Newton Police
Department’s Patrol Division and Investigative Division.
Detectives are in the process of recovering the stolen property.
