NEWTON POLICE DEPARTMENT
PRESS RELEASE – OCTOBER 27, 2009

Chief John Tomasula and the Newton Police Department wish all area
children a safe and happy Halloween. The department recommends that
children follow these guidelines so they may have an enjoyable and
SAFE evening:

Have your parents or older relative go Trick-or-Treating with you.

Trick-or-Treat only in your own neighborhood on well-lighted streets.

Wear a costume that makes it easy for you to walk, see, and be seen.

If you must go out at night, make sure your costume is light in color.

Think about wearing makeup instead of a mask. A facemask will keep
you from seeing clearly. Take off your mask before you cross a
street.

If someone older cannot go with you, Trick-or-Treat with a group of
friends.

Tell your family which streets you will be Trick-or-Treating on.

If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic.

Carry a flashlight so you can be seen by passing cars and also to
allow you to see going up steps and walkways.

Wait until you get home to eat your treats. Have your parents check
them first. Throw away any candy or food that is not wrapped or looks
like it may have been tampered with. If you find any suspicious
treats, tell your parents and the police.

There will be an annual Halloween parade, where prizes will be awarded
for costumes in various age groups. The parade will be on Halloween
night – Saturday, October 31, 2009. Line-up for the parade will be in
the Eastern Plaza parking lot (across from the Newton Theatre). The
parade will begin at 6:00 p.m. Participants will travel from the
Eastern Plaza parking lot, west on Spring St., north on Moran St., and
east on Trinity St., ending in the Central Plaza parking lot across
from the Newton Municipal Building, where costume judging will take
place.

During the parade and throughout the course of the evening, members of
the Newton Police Department will be distributing neon glow necklaces
to all of the local youths in the area.

The police department asks that all Trick-or-Treating end at 8:30
p.m.

The Police Department will not tolerate any type of criminal actions
or malicious mischief during the Holiday.
