The ActionScript programming language allows the development of interactive animations, video games, web applications, desktop applications, and mobile applications. Programmers can implement Flash software using an IDE such as Adobe Animate, Adobe Flash Builder, Adobe Director, FlashDevelop, and Powerflasher FDT. Adobe AIR enables full-featured desktop and mobile applications to be developed with Flash and published for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Wii U, and Nintendo Switch.
Developers could create rich internet applications and browser plugin-based applets in ActionScript 3.0 programming language with IDEs, including Adobe Flash Builder, FlashDevelop and Powerflasher FDT. Flex applications were typically built using Flex frameworks such as PureMVC.[21]
The Flash 4 Linux project was an initiative to develop an open source Linux application as an alternative to Adobe Animate. Development plans included authoring capacity for 2D animation, and tweening, as well as outputting SWF file formats. F4L evolved into an editor that was capable of authoring 2D animation and publishing of SWF files. Flash 4 Linux was renamed UIRA. UIRA intended to combine the resources and knowledge of the F4L project and the Qflash project, both of which were Open Source applications that aimed to provide an alternative to the proprietary Adobe Flash.

It also runs in web browsers, by compiling down to WebAssembly and using HTML5 Canvas.[110] In 2020, the Internet Archive added support for emulating SWF by adding Ruffle to its emulation scheme.[111] As of March 2023, Ruffle states that it supports 95% of the AS1/2 language and 73% of the AS1/2 APIs, but does not correctly run most AS3 (AVM2) applications.[112]
Like the HTTP cookie, a flash cookie (also known as a "Local Shared Object") can be used to save application data. Flash cookies are not shared across domains. An August 2009 study by the Ashkan Soltani and a team of researchers at UC Berkeley found that 50% of websites using Flash were also employing flash cookies, yet privacy policies rarely disclosed them, and user controls for privacy preferences were lacking.[179] Most browsers' cache and history suppress or delete functions did not affect Flash Player's writing Local Shared Objects to its own cache in version 10.2 and earlier, at which point the user community was much less aware of the existence and function of Flash cookies than HTTP cookies.[180] Thus, users with those versions, having deleted HTTP cookies and purged browser history files and caches, may believe that they have purged all tracking data from their computers when in fact Flash browsing history remains. Adobe's own Flash Website Storage Settings panel, a submenu of Adobe's Flash Settings Manager web application, and other editors and toolkits can manage settings for and delete Flash Local Shared Objects.[181]
It din't work for me with Win 10 LTSB. So I've used the registry editor from the free bootable iso KRD18 from kapersky (use rufus to make your bootable flashdrive), but before use it you have to shut down all stuff that can made win 10 to update, desactivate the update service, and then use "StopUpdates10", it is faster than delete "EOSNOTIFY.EXE, UsoClient.exe, MusNotification.exe, UpdateAssistant.exe, WINDOWS10UPGRADERAPP.EXE, remsh.exe, dismHost.exe, SIHClient.exe, InstallAgent.exe, Windows10Upgrade.exe, WaaSMedic.exe" with the file explorer of KRD18. If you don't do this Win 10 will "update" >>> in fact reinstall flashplayer.
In a recent project, where we were building a WAI compliant site, we were asked to avoid flash objects as accessiblity was a major issue. Applets on a different note don't go very well with most web developers ;). One reason might be the differences in the paradigms of Rich UI vs. web UI.
In this context I tend to feel that Flash is meant to be eye candy (view) where as applet though designed to be versatile, takes the role of model on client side. It is to be noted that both applets and flash consume CPU cycles on client machine, hence were traditionally suited for tasks involving lengthy computation. Calculators, Report generators, Trend illustrators, Astrological chart generators (yes) and other tasks where data can be fed by user and are results shown immediately make use of these.
Macromedia Flash, or simply Flash. The Flash Player, developed and distributed by Adobe Systems (who bought Macromedia), is a client application available in most dominant web browsers. It features support for vector and raster graphics, a scripting language called ActionScript and bidirectional streaming of audio and video.
Strictly speaking, Macromedia Flash is the integrated development environment (IDE) and Flash Player is the virtual machine used to run the Flash files, but in colloquial language these have become mixed: "Flash" can mean either the authoring environment, the player, or the application files.
Since its introduction in 1996, Flash technology has become a popular method for adding animation and interactivity to web pages; several software products, systems, and devices are able to create or display Flash. From Richard Entlich's article "Flash in the Pan or Around for the Long Haul?": "Flash traces its origins to a browser plug-in called FutureSplash, originally produced by a company called FutureWave, but purchased by Macromedia in 1996 and renamed Flash. At the time, Macromedia offered a Web plug-in called Shockwave that decoded several of its multimedia products, including Flash. Thus the MIME type for Flash is application/x-shockwave-flash and the file extension for binary Flash files is 'swf' for Shockwave Flash. Ultimately, Macromedia moved away from handling multiple content types with a single plug-in. Today, the Shockwave plug-in is only used to play content produced by Macromedia's Director, an older tool originally for developing interactive CD-ROM content but now also used for Web animation. The plug-in that plays back Flash content is called Flash Player. However, the term Shockwave Flash is still widely used (even by Macromedia), and is the source of much understandable confusion.

If you create an instance of your class andstore it in the data member of your shared object and later readthe object out, you will get a typed instance. One of the learning media that needs to be developed is Macromedia Flash-based learning media the purpose of this study was to develop mathematics learning media in the form of a Macromedia application in solid Geometry for fifth-grade students of SDN Paseban 01 Pagi. The development research method used is Research and Development (R&D), with the ADDIE development model. At the analysis stage, a problem analysis and needs analysis are carried out. At the design stage, an initial design is made which is then validated by material experts and media experts. At the implementation stage, the design of instructional media was tested on 24 students of SDN Paseban 01 Pagi. The evaluation stage aims to analyze expert validation data and student trials. The data collected using the observation method were qualitatively analyzed. The validation data were then evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively in summary. The results showed that Macromedia flashed on space building materials that had been developed based on expert media assessments in terms of display feasibility 85% with highly viable categories, 83% writing learning design with highly feasible categories, engineering and software aspects with highly feasible categories so that the overall assessment of 83% with categories was very feasible. Material expert assessment in terms of feasibility of displaying 90% material with very decent category, 93% learning media utilization aspect with very decent category, quiz aspect 90% with the category is very feasible so overall assessment 91% with the category is very feasible. The trial of the learners was obtained as a result of the 84% display feasibility aspect with a very decent category, the presentation aspect of the material 81% with a very decent category, the aspect to the engineering and software appeal 83% with the category is very feasible so the overall assessment of 83% with the category is very feasible. Based on the results of this acquisition, it can be concluded that the Macromedia Flash application on spatial geometry material is very suitable for use as a learning medium in mathematics subjects.
