"When launching NewsRob the activity stack is cleared. That is intentional. If you want to go back to NewsRob and resume reading the article you were seeing before, you can long press HOME and switch to NewsRob in the recent tasks switcher. You'll get back to the point where you left NewsRob before."  https://sites.google.com/site/newsrobapp/faq

This behaviour doesn't seem to be desirable.  I had to remove NewsRob from my homescreen to stop myself from accidentally  losing my place place when switching tasks.  Launching from the homescreen is quicker than holding home.

This behaviour could be implemented in almost every app, but none of them do it, only this one.   Google reader does not do this.  Gmail does not do this.  No apps do this.  I love NewsRob but this behaviour is driving me crazy!  If I want to go back and see all articles, I'll just use the back button.

This behaviour goes against the android guidelines:

"By contrast, the next figure shows the user leaving List Messages by pressing Home instead of Back — the List Messages activity is stopped and moved to the background rather than being destroyed. Starting Email again from its icon would simply bring the List Messages activity to the foreground (changing it from stopped to running) in the same scrolled state the user last left it." http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/ui_guidelines/activity_task_design.html

"After interacting with that application, the user returns Home again and selects the application that originally started Task A. Now, Task A comes to the foreground" http://developer.android.com/guide/components/tasks-and-back-stack.html

"Caution: Most applications should not interrupt the default behavior for activities and tasks. If you determine that it's necessary for your activity to modify the default behaviors, use caution and be sure to test the usability of the activity during launch and when navigating back to it from other activities and tasks with the Back button. Be sure to test for navigation behaviors that might conflict with the user's expected behavior." http://developer.android.com/guide/components/tasks-and-back-stack.html

You can add the widget to the home screen instead of the launcher and will have the behavior you desired. Check it out.

thanks for your immediate reply and the helpful suggestion.  just tried it, but it has the same behaviour as the regular launcher icon unfortunately...  (android 2.3.7)

Well, yes, but the widget does look *really* out of line in modern versions of the launcher. I know it's frustrating because it's a purely cosmetical issue, and because you can't really fix this (other than by supporting ten different launchers), but I personally couldn't stand it anymore.
It was okay when there was just a slight shift when I used LauncherPro. But with Trebuchet 0.2 on Android 4.1.1, it's so far off that I switched back to the regular shortcut icon. (And I really miss NR being able to remember the position.)

Actually, yeah, just tried it again and it doesn't work for me anymore either, Mariano. I used it for a long time until around the time I upgraded to 4.x and it worked fine back then.

Same here, Galaxy Nexus with JB (CM10 nightly build from 20120818).

Could it be the (a different) launcher maybe? Does stock 4.x also use Trebuchet?

could be.  I'm using ADWLauncher (CM7.2)

no, that's just CM.  the stock launcher is "the stock launcher"

But they look very similar, right? I don't remember seeing another ICS launcher.

Anyway, today the widget seems to work as intended again. I'm not sure what changed. Maybe it requires a single restart of NR?

If the task is first started from the app icon then switching to the task from the widget will still reset the state

However, if it is first started from the widget then switching back using the widget will not reset the state

That's what I meant.

I know this is not so intuitive, but that is also the case for the other way around.

Having the widget gives a second option. I remember very well that in the early days of NewsRob people complained that you cannot go into NewsRob without seeing your old state. They wanted to start afresh every time and that was also the way that most apps work(ed).

Anyway, this approach needs to be rethought anyway for ICS and clearing the stack by using the home button should be ok.
