Yang Xianhong (Abbreviated below as "Yang"):
Let's continue with "Focused Interviews." Now we are connecting
online with Mr. Zhu Lifeng, who lives in Zhaoxing City, Zhejiang
Province, China.
Mr. Zhu Lifeng, are you online? (Mr. Zhu Lifeng greets the audience).
Thank you, Mr. Zhu, for accepting our interview. Allow me to introduce
first the topic of today's interview.
Mr. Zhu Lifeng, who accepts my interview today, is the former secretary
of Mr. Wang Bingzhang, a veteran of democracy movement, an expatriate
in the United States. Mr. Wang Bingzhang is a famous pro-democracy
fighter. During the 1980s he was among the first batch of Chinese
students studying in the United States. After he finished his studies
there, he made a public announcement that he would stay abroad to
engage in China democracy movement. So far he has been in this career
for more than 20 years. He is the founder of the famous magazine
promoting democracy movement, "The Spring of China," and the
founder of the democracy movement organization "China Democracy
Alliance" and "China Democracy Justice Party. He is also the
co-founder of "Free China Movement." In 1998, Wang Bingzhang
entered China with a false identity, to meet with the democracy
movement elements there to establish an opposition party in China. He
was later arrested by the Chinese public security officers and deported
from China after being kept in detention there for some time. However,
in 2002, Wang Bingzhang was kidnapped in Vietnam by Chinese secret
agents and was formally arrested by the Beijing authorities after
having disappeared for half a year. In 2003, he was sentenced to
lifetime imprisonment with the charge of "espionage" and
"orchestrating terror organizations." ...He was released recently,
so he should be very familiar with the relevant information.
... Wang Bingzhang entered China in 1998 with a pseudonym to make
preparations for the establishment of an opposition party; he was
arrested by the Chinese police and deported from China. In 2002 Wang
Bingzhang was kidnapped in Vietnam by the Chinese special agents, taken
back to China, and received a heavy sentence. How much do you know
about what happened? He went in there to prepare for the establishment
of an opposition party and was deported from China, and in 2002 he went
to Vietnam, and was kidnapped by the Chinese special agents: all these
events sound amazing. What is the nature of collusion between the
countries such as Thailand or Vietnam and China?
Zhu: First I have to explain why CCP's attitude underwent such a
great change in 1998. There were four reasons: first, there had been a
change in the international situation. CCP wanted to attack the
elements of the democracy movement from the perspective of the
international public opinion, to transform the image of democracy
movement into one of terrorism, for terrorism had become a public
target at that time. This was the world situation. This is the first
reason.
Secondly, a network of agents has been placed around him. From that
time on, after Yan Qingxin and her partners went abroad, CCP had
completed its placement of a network of special agents around Wang
Bingzhang and his series of activities. CCP's special agents had
penetrated into people who were around Wang Bingzhang, people who were
very close to him. So the condition was mature.
Thirdly, they had obtained crucial evidence. When the Thai government
arrested us, CCP would not let go of the incident of aborted attempt to
set up an explosion to the Chinese embassy; they were going to make a
scene about this incident. This was a rare opportunity for them. And of
course, there was the international situation. This is the third
reason.
Fourthly, by that time CCP's 16th National Congress was to be
convened. Since Wang Bingzhang decided to go there just before the 16th
National Congress, they had to ensure the security of the 16the
National Congress. Therefore, they had to take certain measures.
There were the four measures. CCP's attitude was undergoing some
change.
Yang: Do you know the specific information about his arrest in Vietnam?
What happened then?
Zhu: First of all, I have to say that I was already in prison at that
time. But after I was released, I conducted an analysis of this thing
through talks with friends and have come to grips with some
information. I think I have come to understand at least 80-90 percent
of what happened then. At that time, Wang Bingzhang was trying to carry
out that plan, but undoubtedly he was short of money. Many of his
intended activities in Thailand were focused on raising money. But why
did he stay with Zhang Qi? Let me brief you on the information about
Zhang Qi, Wang Bingzhang's girlfriend in Thailand. Zhang Qi is a
younger sister of Yan Qingxin of Zhonggong, and a daughter of the
chairman of CCP political consultation conference of Sichuan Province.
Yan Qingxin introduced Zhang Qi to Wang Bingzhang. Then, why did Wang
Bingzhang want to stay with Zhang Qi? At that time Wang Bingzhang had
his fiancée (Wang Wang) in the United States, and he also had a
girlfriend in Thailand who was very well conditioned in every aspect.
Then, why did he want to stay with Zhang Qi? It is because at that time
Yan Qingxin was in control of a large amount of fund of Zhonggong;
therefore, he wanted to stay with Zhang Qi for the purpose of raising
money. This was the most fundamental reason. At that time, I remember,
Wang Bingzhang let me issue some documents; among them some classified
documents were issued to Zhang Hongbao and Yan Qingxin. These documents
were about his activities in Thailand and his goals. These documents
were issued to Yan Qingxin. When Wang Bing Zhang returned to the United
States, he occupied himself with raising more money. Actually, Yan
Qingxin and Zhang Qi have been CCP special agents from the very
beginning.
Yang: These two women were collecting his documents?
Zhu: That's right. When they began to pull back their net, they took
care to retrieve all the documents.
Yang: Therefore, his activities in Vietnam was being monitored all the
time.
Zhu: Yes, that's right.
Yang: Therefore, they pulled back the net in Vietnam. However, it is
hard to understand how Chinese special agents could be allowed to
arrest Wang Bingzhang without any restraint in Vietnam?
Zhu: Because there exists a common border public security mutual
assistance treaty between China and Vietnam. Regarding various criminal
cases and public security cases, by notifying the border police, they
could cross the border and went to Vietnam's Mang City to arrest
people. Therefore, they had planned it very well from the beginning.
Why was he summoned to Mang City instead of Hong Kong? Why was he not
allured to Yunnan? Because everything had been prearranged so that
there would be no loopholes in the legal proceedings.
