Next week, the Portuguese Cinema Days in Berlin present two films that differ greatly in theme and style, yet share a common distinction: they have captured attention for their singularity and the questions they raise.

Times João Liberada
follows João, an actress from Lisbon, as she portrays Liberada — a fictional
figure from the 18th century inspired by historical records of people
persecuted by the Portuguese Inquisition for their gender nonconformity.
As the film within the film unfolds, João begins to question how Liberada’s
story is being told: Why are we centering the narrative on violence rather than
on the person herself? How can we give voice to those whose lives have been
erased or distorted by society?
Thoughtful and subtly political, the work blurs the boundaries between reality
and fiction, inviting us to reconsider how queer stories are told — and what it
means to reclaim voices that were once silenced.

On Falling depicts Aurora, a Portuguese migrant working as a warehouse picker in Scotland, caught between the vast monotony of her workplace and the isolation of her shared flat. In a landscape shaped by algorithm‑driven gig labour, she struggles to preserve her identity and seek connection amid loneliness and alienation.

Duas Vezes João Liberada segue João, uma actriz de Lisboa, enquanto interpreta Liberada — uma figura fictícia do século XVIII, inspirada em registos históricos de pessoas perseguidas pela Inquisição portuguesa por serem dissidentes de género.
À medida que o filme dentro do filme se desenrola, João questiona a forma como a história é contada. Porquê centrar-se na violência, em vez de dar protagonismo à pessoa retratada? Como dar voz àqueles cujas vidas foram apagadas ou distorcidas pela sociedade?
Reflexiva e politicamente subtil, a obra atenua as fronteiras entre realidade e ficção, convidando-nos a repensar a forma como se contam as histórias de pessoas queer e o que significa recuperar vozes antes silenciadas.

On Falling retrata Aurora, uma migrante portuguesa que trabalha num
grande armazém de vendas online na Escócia, dividida entre a monotonia do
trabalho e o isolamento do apartamento compartilhado. Entre a rotina repetitiva
do armazém e o isolamento do apartamento compartilhado, Aurora tenta preservar a
sua identidade e encontrar relações que a protejam da solidão e da alienação.
