The Portuguese Cinema Days in Berlin kick off this Friday at 19:30 at the Moviemento cinema in Kreuzberg.

This year's festival celebrates the 50th anniversary of the “25 de Abril”: exploring our roots and the transformative changes that followed the Carnation Revolution.

Opening Night: We start strong with Peregrinação, a daring work by João Botelho that takes you on the extraordinary travels of Fernão Mendes Pinto—a Portuguese figure from the 16th century who was a slave, merchant, pirate, and explorer.
Some kind of mix of historic drama with musical, it includes the stunning interpretation of the songs from Fausto’s acclaimed album, Por este rio acima.  [trailer]
Guest: João Botelho

Special Animation Session: On Sunday, November 3rd, don’t miss two remarkable animated films by José Miguel Ribeiro, one of the most awarded Portuguese animation filmmakers.
Guest: José Miguel Ribeiro.

  • Estilhaços: This film reflects on the scars of war, not just on soldiers but on generations to come.  [trailer]
  • Nayola: Follow the lives of three generations of Angolan women navigating war and dictatorship, yearning for freedom and happiness, based on a script by the writer José Eduardo Agualusa. [trailer]

Women in Focus: The session on Wednesday, November 6th, spotlights the conditions of life for women during the Estado Novo regime, featuring three films.

Guests: Luísa Sequeira + Sama ("O que podem as palavras")

  • O que podem as palavras: A documentary about the scandal of Novas Cartas Portuguesas (New Portuguese Letters), a literary work published jointly by Portuguese writers Maria Isabel Barreno, Maria Teresa Horta, and Maria Velho da Costa in 1972. The authors became internationally known as "The Three Marias." The book's publication and subsequent banning, along with the international outcry over the authors' arrest, revealed the existence of extreme dictatorial repression and the power of the Catholic-based patriarchy in Portugal. • Tão pequeninas, tinham o ar de serem já crescidas: A tribute to the young maids of the past, critiquing the era that sent young girls to serve in other families’ homes far from home. [trailer]
  • Menina: A glimpse into the life of a middle-class young woman during the dictatorship. [trailer]
