Légua is a profoundly faithful portrait of a rural world that Portuguese audiences will recognize instantly, and an introduction to Portuguese culture for Berlin viewers. The film reveals a mindset shaped by work, loyalty to tradition, and the social hierarchy that still structures people’s lives. Through three generations of women and the relationships between them, it portrays a world undergoing inevitable transformation — with a portrayal so authentic that, although it is fiction, it could at times be mistaken for a documentary about a way of life in Portugal that is slowly disappearing.
