LONDON April 5 (UPI) - Five people died when gunmen attacked the
funeral procession of Georgian opposition leader Gocha Esebua, who was
shot by security forces earlier this week after he took four U.N.
soldiers hostage.
A BBC report says another accused kidnapper, Zurab Shonia, was among
those killed. It says Georgian police have not identified the killers.
News agency Itar-Tass says seven other people were wounded in the
attack, which took place today in the town of Zugdidi in western
Georgia.
Esebua, who was 29, was suspected of involvement in a Feb. 9
assassination attempt on Georgian leader Eduard Shevardnadze.
Ten days later, Esebua's gang kidnapped the U.N. personnel. They were
freed and Esebua escaped, but he was later trapped and killed by
security forces.
