GAZA, April 5 (UPI) - Israeli troops have safely defused a large bomb
planted near a Jewish settlement in southern Gaza, which police suspect
may be linked to the Islamic militant group Hamas.
Police discovered the bomb this morning by a fence next to the
settlement of Gush Katif, Israeli radio reports. No one was injured in
the incident.
Tensions between Israel and the Palestinians have increased since the
death last week of militant Muhye Dein Sharif. Hamas blamed his death on
Israeli Security Services, and then vowed revenge attacks in Israel and
abroad.
Hamas spokesman Abdel Aziz Ranteesi today denied a Jerusalem Post
article in which he reportedly said Palestinian police may have killed
Sharif. The Post quoted him as saying Palestinian security officers
arrested Sharif, tortured him to death, then put his body in a car and
blew it up to hide their crime.
Ranteesi told United Press International the article is ``a dirty
lie,'' fabricated by the newspaper to create division among
Palestinians. He said Israeli police, not Palestinians, killed Sharif.
Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu told told the cabinet that
Israel was not involved in the killing. Netanyahu chastised Palestinian
authorities for not controlling the ``terrorism of the fundamentalists.''
