PA arrest Hamas killing suspects
By SAUD ABU RAMADAN

GAZA, April 6 (UPI) - Palestinian authority police have announced
five suspects from the West Bank town of Ramallah have been arrested
after they confessed they killed Islamic resistance movement Hamas
militant Muhye Dein Al Sherif in an explosion last week.

Palestinian Authority Secretary-General Tayeb Abdul Raheem told
reporters today the five people are Hamas militants and they killed the
movement's bomb master because of internal conflict within the
fundamentalist movement.

Hamas spokesman Abdel Aziz Ranteesi told reporters after a three-hour
meeting that the Palestinian Authority assertions are ``not acceptable
by Hamas at all.''

``The initial investigation of Izzel Dein Al Kassam (Hamas armed
wing) announced clearly that Israel was behind the assassination of
Sherif,'' Ranteesi said. ``Al Kassam is still investigating the case.''

Palestinian Planning Minister Nabil Sha'ath told reporters Israel was
not responsible for killing Sherif. He said, ``Palestinian security
forces had identified all those involved, who are Hamas militants close
to Sherif.''

Palestinian police sources said several Hamas members had been
arrested in connection with the slaying and that they had confessed that
Sherif was killed as the result of conflict within the Islamic
fundamental organization.

Raheem said the Palestinian security forces had arrested five Hamas
members in connection with the killing. He said: ``The case is not one
of individuals. We have proved that no state is behind this.''

Israeli radio reported that Palestinian security forces arrested a
total of 30 Hamas activists in the West Bank on charges of plotting
attacks against Israel, and uncovered several Hamas bomb factories in
the Ramallah area of the West Bank.
