JERUSALEM, April 3 (UPI) - Two Israeli civilians have been injured,
one critically, in separate attacks in the West Bank.
A spokesman for the Magen David Adom first aid service says today a
50-year-old man sustained a critical head injury when he drove past Bir
Naballlah, north of Jerusalem. A military spokesman says a stone hurled
at his car apparently crashed through the front windshield and hit him.
Earlier a fire bomb was thrown at an Israeli car west of the
settlement of Ariel, and a woman was slightly injured.
The attacks come a day after Palestinians buried Islamic Hamas
activist Muhye Dein Sherif. Palestinians say Israeli security forces
killed Sherif, but Israeli officials maintain he was killed while
preparing a car bomb.
The head of Israel's Shin Bet secret service Ami Ayalon traveled to
Gaza Thursday night and told Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat his
government was not involved in the incident. Israel's Defense Minister
Yitzhak Mordechai also told U.S. Ambassador Ned Walker his country did
not kill Sherif.
Nevertheless, Hamas has pledged to avenge Sherif's death. Israeli
soldiers and Border Policemen have been out in force, especially in
Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, to protect vulnerable spots.
