Here's the latest from the UPI Sports Desk.

The Los Angeles Lakers got 35 points and a dozen boards from
Shaquille O'Neal and roared back from 18 down in the third quarter to
outlast the Detroit Pistons in overtime, 105-103.

Guard Nick Van Exel, who added 19 points, says LA needed to kick it
into overdrive to win its fifth straight.

The Pistons have dropped three overtime games in a week. Other
winners were Chicago, Utah, Seattle, Boston, Philadelphia, Cleveland,
Washington, Sacramento, Minnesota, and, Indiana.

Rick Majerus, coach of the Utah basketball team, reportedly will meet
with officials from the University of Texas to talk about replacing Tom
Penders. Majerus recently rejected an offer from Arizona State.

Penders resigned last week after three weeks of controversy. It was
sparked when unhappy players met with athletic director DeLoss Dodds.

Kirk Muller scored off a rebound in the third period to help the
Florida Panthers beat the Pittsburgh Penguins, 3-1. Also winning were
New Jersey, the New York Rangers, and, Ottawa. Anaheim and Calgary
played a 3-3 draw.

The Boston Red Sox doubled the Seattle Mariners, 10-5. Right-hander
Bret Saberhagen of the Red Sox, a former Cy Young Award winner in the
American League, won his first game in three seasons.

Other AL winners were New York, Baltimore, Cleveland, Texas,
Minnesota, and, Tampa Bay.

National League winners were New York, Milwaukee, Los Angeles,
Philadelphia, Arizona, Houston, Chicago, and, San Diego.

The St. Louis Rams picked up backup quarterback Steve Bono from the
Green Bay Packers for a late-round draft pick next year. Last season,
Bono played second-fiddle to MVP Brett Favre of the Pack. This year, he
will fight to back up Tony Banks of the Rams.

The American doubles team of Todd Martin and Rickey Reneberg beat a
Russian duo that include Yevgeny Kafelnikov in four sets to take a 2-1
lead.

Two singles matches are scheduled today.

Amanda Coetzer whalloped Irina Spirlea, 6-3, 6-4, to win the Family
Circle Cup championship.
