The New York Yankees needed 10 innings to outlast the Oakland
Athletics, 9-7, to get into the win column. Earlier, New York had blown
a couple of leads.
Manager Joe Torre said he is glad the pinstripers avoided their worst
start in a quarter-century.
Also winning in the AL were Cleveland, which is unbeaten, Baltimore,
Texas, Tampa Bay, Minnesota, and, Boston.
National League victories went to Arizona, which won for the first
time, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Milwaukee, Houston, and, San
Diego.

Outfielder Otis Nixon of the Minnesota Twins has a broken jaw after
rookie shortstop Felix Martinez of the Kansas City Royals kicked him in
the face during a play at second base.
Nixon was trying to break up a double play when he slid into second
in the first inning of K.C.'s victory Saturday night. X-rays show the
break in the lower left part of his jaw. He played the rest of the game,
but, sat out yesterday's contest.

The Washington Wizards used Rod Strickland's third triple-double of
the season to get past the Orlando Magic, 88-85, to stay alive in the
chase for the playoffs. Other winners were Chicago, the Los Angeles
Lakers, Seattle, Sacramento, Utah, Boston, Minnesota, Cleveland,
Indiana, and, Philadelphia.

The New York Rangers broke an eight-game winless streak by outlasting
the Chicago Blackhawks in overtime, 2-1. The Rangers were erased from
the playoff picture, however. Also winning were Florida, New Jersey,
and, Ottawa. Calgary played Anaheim to a 3-3 deadlock.

Gil Morgan defended his championship at the Tradition with a two-shot
win over Tom Wargo.

Lee Westwood of Britain grabbed his first title on the PGA Tour with
a three-shot victory at the Freeport-McDermott Classic.

Donna Andrews birdied the 15th and 16th holes and stormed back for a
one-shot win over Carin Koch at the Longs Drugs Challenge.

Mark Martin shaded Chad Little to win the NASCAR Winston Cup Texas
500.

Defending champion Alexa Zanardi edged pole-sitter Bryan Herta to
take the CART Long Beach Grand Prix by passing Herta with two laps left.
