AUSTIN, Texas, April 6 (UPI) - Manslaughter charges have been filed
against a 13-year-old Austin boy who allegedly shot and killed an 8-
year-old boy over the weekend.
Police say the 13-year-old said he'd bought the weapon for protection
and that he'd bragged to others that he had a gun.
Police say their still investigating the shooting death Saturday of
third-grader Bobby Joe Salazar, and that charges against the suspect
could be upgraded if it's determined the shooting was intentional.
Salazar was shot once in the chest with a 9 mm bullet in the backyard
shed of a realtive's home. The boy ran from the shed and collapsed in
the front yard, where paramedics were unable to revive him.
The suspect appeared Saturday night before state District Judge
Jeanne Meurer, who said the youth appeared upset. The suspect was not
indentified because of his age.
Officials said the shooting is further evidence that guns are readily
available to children.
Meurer said: ``The accessibility is just phenomenal. They can get a
gun at the drop of a hat.''
Police spokesman Kevin Buckman said that prior to the shooting, ``the
suspect had been bragging about having a gun. The suspect told
detectives that he bought the gun several days ago for protection.''
Investigators say they're trying to find out where he bought the gun.
