WESTMINSTER, Colo., April 6 (UPI) - A 9-year-old mentally disabled
girl from suburban Denver is missing after a mix-up during a road trip
from Utah to her home.
Police say today Shonna Smith's mother, Shelly, told them they
decided on Saturday to drive to Colorado convoy-style with an Indiana
family they met in a Salt Lake City homeless shelter.
The woman let Shonna ride with a couple she identified as Veronica
Williams and Stanley Fuqua to keep the couple's 2-year-old daughter
company. But Smith got a traffic ticket in Utah, which separated her
vehicle from the other couple's.
Smith, who told police she left her home in Westminster, Colo., two
weeks ago to get her five children away from her husband, said she drove
to a prearranged rendevous point in western Colorado but the others were
not there.
Police speculate that the couple may have driven on to Indianapolis,
where they have lived before, out of fear that they have somehow broken
the law.
Westminster police spokesman Dan Mayer (MY'-er) tells United Press
International, ``Honestly right now, we don't think they've done
anything wrong.''
But he concedes police fear they might panic and leave the child
somewhere. The girl's family says she has the mental capacity of a 3-
year-old child and is probably not able to communicate basic information
about herself.
Mayer says police agencies along the Interstate 70 corridor from Utah
to Indiana have been alerted. The couple was last seen driving an older
maroon Ford station with a temporary Utah registration tag.
