Orphaned children recovered

CHICAGO, April 3 (UPI) - The missing children of a Chicago couple
stabbed to death in their home earlier this week have been found,
apparently unharmed.

The 2-month-old daughter and 3-year-old son of Mariano and Jacinta
Soto are being evaluated at a hospital today and will be placed in state
custody.

Police won't say where they found the children or with whom. Earlier,
investigators had said the whereabouts of the children might hold the
key to the deaths of their parents.

The bodies of the Sotos were discovered late Wednesday in their
basement apartment but the children, Santiago, who is autistic and 2-
month-old Maria, were missing.

Detectives are investigating the slayings as a double murder. But
Grand Central Area Cmdr. Philip Cline says it is possible that killings
were a murder-suicide.

A kitchen knife was found beneath the husband's body and there was no
sign of forced entry to the apartment. A neighbor said he overheard the
couple arguing last Saturday.

Cline told the Chicago Sun-Times, ``It's possible someone could have
come to the scene, found them dead and became concerned for the kids'
safety. Not realizing what the rules and regulations are in Chicago,
they may have taken the kids.''

Mariano Soto worked in maintenance at a Franklin Park tool
manufacturing plant for more than a decade. Four years ago, he returned
to Mexico and married Jacinita.
