Police: Mom, pals beat child to death

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y., April 2 (UPI) - New York State Police say a 3-year-

old boy is dead as a result of horrific abuse at the hands of three
people, including his mother.

Police say the boy's mother, her boyfriend and their landlord
repeatedly battered the child, burned him with cigarettes, scalded him
with hot water and threw him down a flight of stairs in their Mamakating
home.

Someone at the Sullivan County home called an ambulance for the child
on Wednesday, and the boy was airlifted to St. Francis Hospital in
Poughkeepsie.

The boy had a broken jaw, a broken arm, burns and bite marks all over
his body, massive trauma, a lacerated liver and a collapsed lung. He
died of his injuries Wednesday evening.

Police today arrested 27-year-old Tracy Ann Irwin, her boyfriend, 33-
year-old William Banker, and their landlord and friend, 31-year-old
Jeanna Lynn Lester. All three are charged with second degree murder and
are being held without bail.

Police say the boy's body had wounds on top of wounds, and even a
family photograph of the smiling child showed him with what appeared to
be a cigarette burn on his forehead.

They say the final savage beating may have been triggered by the
child taking a piece of candy that belonged to one of the defendants.
