It's been about 6 years since I was interested in downloading binaries. At
the time I used Xnews, but it doesn't seem to work so well with lots of
headers. Has anyone tried the new TEST version? Is it ok or a waste of time?

Any opinions on other readers greatly appreciated.

says...

Been many years since I did download binaries, but at that time I
thought that Gravity 2.6 was doing a very good job. I had upgraded to
the point where someone had included yenc capability. multi-part posts
often didn't get completed on the server, but when they were, the
download and decoding was seamless.

I haven't tried with 2.9 ... don't have access to binary groups any
more. Sometimes that's a pain in the arse, like the rec.woodworking.bin
group could be very useful.

If you aren't doing very much with binaries, you can use your OE with
yProxy.

If you need to nzb then you need another plan.

2.9.x is the same, the newest programmer has no interest in
binaries and hasn't changed a thing in that part.

Gravity really isn't a power binary downloader, although some users
still use it. I do too, but my binaries chores are light - like
occasional mp3s. Just to be aware, the limitations are: It has no
NZB or native PAR support, is limited to a single connection, and
will not post yEnc (but *will* decode yEnc). None of that matters
to me but could matter to a serious binary warrior.

With that said, some of the Gravity faithful like the filters and
rules, and the interface they are used to.

There really hasn't been much change to Xnews over the past 6 years. The
biggest change has been to the 2009 version, which allows access to the
newsgroups with article numbers over 2 billion (like alt.binaries.boneless).
In order to use this version properly, though, you need to be using a 64 bit
version of your operating system.

While you can use any version of Windows with the 2009 version to read the
articles, the folders don't work with 32 bit OS's. As I recall, I couldn't
even download directly from the newsgroup itself) when using 32 bit XP - but
I could be mistaken about that.

===============

If I'm doing just the occasional binary on newsgroups that I stay current
with, I use Xnews. If I'm looking for a specific file, I use Binsearch to
create an NZB and Grabit to download it.

Unfortunately Snooze's home page http://www.howepark.co.uk/ was hosted by
Geocities. When Yahoo closed down Geocities, this page was no longer
available.
