What is the thinking behind Xnews using Xref for measuring crossposts
rather than than Newsgroups? Or to put the question another way why
allow score.ini access to Xref but not Newsgroups?

Xref is dependant on the ngs that the server is carrying and
Newsgroups indicates the intended cross posting of the sender.

It seems to me that killing crossposted articles shouldn't be limited
by the groups the server carries. I'm killing something because it
was crossposted not because it was crossposted to a sub-set of
newsgroups carried by a server.

IF (for example) I chose to use a server that doesn't carry binary
groups AND I would like to kill articles crossposted to more than 4
groups AND someone crossposts to a group I am interested in plus a
whole lot of binary groups not carried by the server I can't kill the
article because of the crossposting as far as I see because Xnews is
looking at Xref rather than Newsgroups.

Am I perhaps missing something obvious?

Perhaps. XOVER usually returns Xref, but not Newsgroups (and Xnews
uses XOVER to retrieve the headers). In other words, the Newsgroups
info isn't available until after you have already downloaded the
message.

Novice ........

How would I construct a rule using Xref to kill crossposts to more than 3
newsgroups?

TIA

Just use the Misc tab of the Setup Xnews menu option.

I have used that. its doesn't work too well, and I'd like a little more
control over the operation.

TIA

Not sure what you mean by "more control". You can put this in your
score file:

[.]
Score:: -9999
Xref: blond|(.*:){4,}

This kills any post with crossposting to 4 or more groups, and any
posting to a group containing "blond".

Anything fancier can be gotten from studying the scoring.txt and
pcre.html files included with Xnews.
