To post hand·crafted <img> tags (HTML), as I do (above),
you need a news·client that can post HTML·Only
and a news·server that allows it.

My server ( newsRead.Glorb.COM:80 ) is un·filtered;
it allows HTML·Only posts.

As far as I know, my hand·crafted news·client (X.ZIP)
is the only one that can produce HTML·Only posts.

By “HTML·Only”, I mean: “ Content-Type: Text/HTML ”
not: “ Content-Type: multipart/alternative ”.

telnet isn't an NNTP client, copy&paste isn't hand·crafted HTML.

The post (above) was just you (Robb)
using telnet to copy&paste your e·Bay ad:

This is Usenet, zombie·land, every night is Halloween.

X.EXE was built by·and·for me, no one else.

You can't post HTML·Only via Google·Groups nor Windows Live Mail.
As far as I know, ThunderBird won't do it either.

You (Moroney) think I'd have to pay someone to make such a post;
if true, that tells me something right there... no one will do it.

Mr. Koobee Wublee (and others) have asked me how I do it.

I know of no mainstream client (and no cost·free server) that can do it;
so I asked (and re·asked) the “experts” at:

Alt.Free.Newsservers, News.Software.Readers

Robb (Shared·Secret's admin) was the only one who could do it;
however the client he used ("telnet", copy&paste) isn't mainstream and
his server isn't cost·free (worse, he won't let you post HTML·Only).

Misrepresenting the facts will not bring you anything. I *repeatedly*
*said* I can do it, but I said I want to know *why* you want this test.
You have failed to answer.

Now you come up with all kind of new stuff like "mainstream" (*Why*
does it need to be "mainstream"?) and "cost-free" (*Why* does it have to
be "cost-free"?).

So put up or shut up.

Put on your reading glasses Frank, I said
people are asking me how to make a post like that (above).

I'd like to answer, but I can't give them an easy solution.
Pay servers with proud (non·anonyomus) admin/owners can do it.

X.EXE and “telnet” will do it.

Google Groups and Windows Live Mail will ·NOT· do it.
As far as I know, ThunderBird won't do it.

You claim tin will do it, but I don't believe you;
besides, tin isn't a main·stream client.

One should view free news servers as one would view
a carnival sideshow. Like a carnival sideshow, free
servers arrive in town every so often and there's
always some grifter hawking suspect wares and swindling
gullible people, if not out of their money then their
time. The carnival geek represents the free news server
administrator. The fat lady represents the size of his
ego. The clown represents the usual, laughable TOS.
The sword swallower is tantamount to what happens to a
subscriber at the other end of the alimentary canal.
Like the toss the ring at the Coke bottle game, free
news servers are rigged against the user and are
a cheat and a swindle.

Yes, *now* *you* said that. You never said it before and I have yet to

Correct and probably correct.

I think it can. As I said, tin *can* do it. Think about what tin is
*not* and what tin does *not* include, then you might figure out how to
do it in other clients.

> You claim tin will do it, but I don't believe you;

I'm crushed! Jeff doesn't believe me! How will I *ever* recover!?

But never mind all that. You may (not) want to check my headers and
may (not) want to check my footnote and start eating that egg off your
face. (And before you start to whine about it: Yes, the "X-" additions
are *intentional*, and the (non) HTML is *intentionally* at the bottom.)

Again, *why* does it have to be a "mainstream" client and *why* does
it have to be a "cost-free" server?

Telnet is a lot more mainstream than your thing of a usenet client.

Do I want to read that? Nothing against i with two dots or A with a

Once again, you confuse "could" with "would". I "can" do it (and without
resorting to telnet), but I think enough of Usenet that I "will" not.

I tried but I can't do it. My buggy software has the option to override
stock header settings (even has a check box that states "Override Default
Settings" but when I override them in the settings it just seems to ignore
the override and it continues to use the stock settings. Pictures do display
in Windows Mails in spite of this but they will NOT display in Google
Groups. It just shows the HTML and link to the picture. This is because no
matter what I do to try to override the stock settings they just won't be
overridden no matter what I add in the headers options fields.

Thank you ( Frank ) for posting:
“ Content-Type: text/html; charset="Windows-1252" ”.

And thanks for letting me know that
News.Individual.NET wouldn't allow it.

However, your HTML was auto·generated, not hand·crafted.

Can Windows (Live) Mail post hand·crafted HTML ?

You're 'welcome'.

I think it can. In a HTML composition window, you have Edit, Source
and Preview buttons. If I reply to your post and hit Source, I can edit
the HTML source.

But as I said before, you should describe in more detail *what* you
*exactly* want, and *why* you want it. Without that kind of information,
people can't or/and won't help you.

For example, you ask "Can Windows Mail post handcrafted HTML?" and the
answer to *that* question is "yes".

But if the question would (also) be "Can Windows *Mail* *compose*
HTML-*only* articles?" (emphasis mine), then my answer would be, "I
don't know.", because *I* don't know how to *compose* HTML-*only*
articles with Windows *Mail*. (I *composed* my article
mixedpart/alternative with Windows *Mail*, I *made* it HTML-*only* with
*Windows* (not Windows *Mail*), and I *posted* it with Windows *Mail*.)

See how important the *exact* what and why are?

So no more beating around the bush.

Just post the (*exact*) source of the HTML code you want me to post,
and I'll try.

I'm not an HTML-type and don't know and don't want to know how to
create "just a working <img> tag, nothing more".

And BTW, I'm using Windows Mail, not Windows Live Mail.

I edited the (multipart/alternative) message in the Outbox, put it

Frank, the body of the HTML message should have just 2 lines, no more;
you can use these 2 lines ( hand-crafted ):

<img src="http://jeffrelf.f-m.fm/Eric Gisse 2009 in FairBanks Alaska.jpg"
alt="Eric Gisse 2009 in FairBanks Alaska">

It can't be done with Windows Live Mail because
“ Content-Type: Text/HTML ” becomes
“ Content-Type: multipart/alternative ”.

I haven't checked ThunderBird·3, xNews can do it.

I see you ( Frank ) did it ( via Windows Mail and Home.NL ):
http://google.com/group/alt.free.newsservers/msg/2e038794fb789e99

Very interesting but I have only Windows Live Mail,
and it can't do it. The thing is...
earlier versions of Outlook Express ( before Windows Live Mail )
can't “>quote” lines from a Google Groups post... so they're crap.

Amazingly, most·everyone REFUSES to upgrade ! !
and no one will paraphrase or use “”quote-marks (as I do), of course.

Done (see second attempt). Looks OK to me, both in Windows Mail and in
tin (which just says it's there, but doesn't display it, because I
haven't told it to do so).

> It can't be done with Windows Live Mail because

> ? Content-Type: Text/HTML ? becomes
> ? Content-Type: multipart/alternative ?.

That also happens in Windows Mail. That's why you have to edit the
copy of the message in the *Outbox*, not in the Drafts folder. Also you
have to do the edit with something *other* than Windows (Live) Mail,
because if W(L)M sees a HTML-only message, it will try to convert it to
multipart/alternative (with a text/plain and text/html part). Why?
Because that's the sane/decent thing to do.

> I haven't checked ThunderBird3, xNews can do it.

I'm sure ThunderBird can do things in a similar manner. If it can use
an (external?) editor, which can edit (i.e. add/delete/change)
*headers*, then the process becomes a little simpler.

BTW, apparently News.Individual.NET does *propagate* HTML-only
articles. NIN is my main feed and I can see/display my HTML-only article
just fine.

So NIN does not allow to *post* an HTML-only article *to* NIN, but
HTML-only articles propagate *to*/*through* NIN and hence can be *read*
*from* NIN (and other servers).

BTW2, you owe me 30 Euro cents from the mobile (GPRS/HSDPA) modem
traffic used for my test! :-)

I don't recall if I used Live·Mail's out·box or not,
perhaps I'll try it again ( not today ).

I saw your ( Frank's ) HTML post:
http://google.com/group/alt.free.newsservers/msg/2e038794fb789e99

Individual.NET has your HTML post but won't let you post it, got it.

Instead of spending 30 Euro cents to post via your cell·phone,
you could signup with “ www.Glorb.COM/usenet.php ” ( 10 dollars/YEAR ).
The un·filtered server is “ newsRead.Glorb.COM:80 ”. Glorb rocks !

No cost·free server can do it ( thank you very much Junior @TIOAT.NET ).
Junior is untra·worried about how <img> tags reveal IP·Addresses.
He's all about anonymity.

I.e. I *posted* the article to (actually via) ...nb.home.nl, but it's
(also) *available* on NIN ('uni-berlin.de') [1].

[1] I actually use News.Individual.DE, not .NET, but that should make no
difference.

The mobile connection was my *ISP* at that (and this moment), not my
*NSP*. My NSPs are Ziggo (which is also my regular (stationary) broadband
ISP) and NIN. I posted my HTML-only test to news.ziggo.nl.

The mobile network operators in our country are rather peculiar, they
actually want *money* for their services! Figure that!?

But don't worry, 'your' data cost still fitted in my monthly data

What the *real* purpose is, is only known to our friend Jeff, who
ignores any questions as to why. (And, until now, most of the how
questions.)

But what it should 'do' is: Your newsreader should render the HTML
*if* you have (explicitly or implicitly) told it to do so, and it should
show the picture *if* you have told it (explicitly or implicitly) to do
so.

The test was a test with Windows Mail (Vista's Outlook Express
replacement. WM will render the html by default, but is smart enough to
NOT load/display the *external* content (i.e. in this case the .jpg) by
default. (Outlook Express has the same behaviour and I assume that
(Vista/Windows 7) Windows Live Mail has the same behaviour as well.

I.e. this particular piece of HTML-only code is rather innocent.

FWIW, my (normal) newsreader, tin, just displays this single
information line:

> [-- text/html, encoding quoted-printable, charset: UTF-8, 3 lines --]

I.e. tin says *what* there is, but does not render or display it. It
can display (not render) the HTML with a keypress (^H).

Speaking hand-crafted HTML, you ( Frank ) told Snipe:
“ What the *real* purpose is, is only known to our friend Jeff,

Google·Groups is a web·site, why auto·load images on a web·page ?
I like images, at times, so I add them to my posts, e.g.:
http://google.com/group/alt.free.newsservers/msg/27811c3f8d6a6c79

People Googling their handles find this post ( URL, above ) and,
because of the <img> tag, I have a recorded of it... good times.

About 4 weeks from now, a Google·Images search for TIOAT.NET
will show the image. ( Yes, Google·Images often lags by weeks )

All of which does not explain the 'need' for HTML-*only*, other than
the 'need' to be a jerk, that is.

Don't worry! His stalking only works for Google Groupers which *also*
Google their "handles" [1]. Google Group[er]s is not "Usenet".

[1] They don't actually Google their 'handles', but let's not make Jeff

I think you lack understanding concerning this, Frank.

The discussion alludes to the fact that when Jeff includes a link to a photo
of his which is hosted on Fast Mail he is able to examine the logs to see IP
numbers from those who accessed the photo.

And, Robb, who seems to often identify with the Usenet dolts, seems to think
this is unethical behavior. Duh! I don't get it. Anybody using a decent
Usenet client can set it to not display pictures unless approved by the
client master if they are intimidated by Jeff.

Let the buyer beware. If people are stupid enough to use Google Groups to
post to and read newsgroups then they deserve to have their stupidity used
against them.

That's the way of the world . . .

What Jeff really needs to do is get an alt.net account where html can be
propagated independent of Google Groups. Not all NSP admins continue to live
in the Usenet Dark Ages, Robb. Not all of them think baby sitting is a noble

And exactly *why* can't *Jeff* use Google Groups if he 'needs' to post
HTML?

Non sequitur. It has *nothing* to do with News *admins*, but
everything with accepted *policy/practice/<whatever>*, which *includes*
hierarchies/groups were HTML *is* accepted.

Face it, nobody has a *real* problem, including Jeff (other than being
Jeff of course).

Because there is no way in the Google Groups, web-based software to include
the, Content-Type: Text/HTML header.

Speaking of this bit of evilness:
Content-Type: Text/HTML; charset=UTF-8

Glorb propagates it just fine, even Individual.NET users can read it.
Most everyone can see it ( I know, I have the records ).

From you ( Gregory Hall ) to me ( Relf ) the path is:
newsread.glorb.com!news-spur1.glorb.com!news.glorb.com!news.alt.net

It's ·ALWAYS· a direct route: Alt.NET to Glorb.COM .

Glorb is flawless, the admin ( Geoff Brozny ) is flawless; and
it's just 10 dollars per year, no in·line binaries ( thank God ).

At the moment there's a similar poster in alt.comp.freeware. He's
interested in IPs of people he has long-running arguments with. I think
it's not quite the same situation as n.s.r. because Robb mentions the
use of a src= tag which would fool Google but not a lot of other
servers.

The a.c.f. guy simply posts a link to a photo which goes to a shortlink
service and then goes to a dns redirection service and then to his own
server to get the photo.
