I've not used XNews for a couple of years now so I'm not sure if this is
still the best place to get the latest versions.

No, that's the official site.

Correct, 2006.08.24 is the latest release.

XS11E, Killing all posts from Google Groups
Turns out that the version numbers aren't going to be relevant in any
case.
I wanted to try out XNews to see if I could access news.individual.net
while at work rather than being forced to use Google Groups. It turns
out that access is blocked so I remain forced to use Google.
Thanks for the responses.

My service provider blocks port 119! Is there an alternate port for your
news server?
Yes. If your provider blocks the standard NNTP port (119), or if he
degrades connections on this port, please change the port setting in
your newsreading software to port 8119.
</quote>
So the next question is whther Xnews can use port 8119. I assume the
answer is 'yes', but since I don't use Xnews, I don't know.
Looks like any access to that domain is blocked.
Does it block *all* access, i.e. also HTTP (<http://news.individual.net>)?
If so, that's rather strange, i.e. why block a perfectly innocent
*domain*?
In any case, check *what* is blocked, the *port* (i.e. 119, 80, other)
or/and the *protocol* (i.e. NNTP, HTTP) or/and the *domain*.
If port 80 isn't blocked, then some free News servers provide *NNTP*
access via port *80*.
And there's no absolute need to use news.individual.net, is there?
I.e. you can use *any* News server that works, can't you?

Just for shits and giggles, can you telnet in?

open news.individual.net 8119
See if it asks for authinfo.

Yes http is also blocked. There are a range of sites that are deemed as
non work-related that are similarly blocked.
