I used to use pan and was happy with it, but it started acting
up about a year or so ago, so I can no longer use it. I switched
to Thunderbird (I work under Ubuntu Linux) and it's OK, but not
as nice, I feel.
Does anyone know what is wrong with pan?
What other news readers are recommended?

You'd need to provide more info than "started acting up" if you want us
to debug pan... reminds me of the old favorite "it had a glitch!"

Anyway, I use Gnus, which is quite featureful but if you've never used
emacs before, it's probably not a good fit.

Claws can read news. I've only ever used it for email, but it does a
great job at that so maybe give it a shot?

No one can help you on "started activing up" for pan.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oo_Z4KLhPfI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbmtxvF8Sz0

"not as nice" is also overtly vague to prevent anyone from addressing
what issues, if any, you have with Thunderbird other than unfamiliarity
which use over time will overcome. For help with Thunderbired, go to
the alt.comp.software.thunderbird newsgroup. Just be aware there are
some features in Thunderbird on Windows that are not doable under Linux.

> Does anyone know what is wrong with pan?

https://pan.rebelbase.com/

Click on the "bug reports" navbar link. That will reveal a link to
their GitHub project site where bugs are tracked.

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/pan/-/issues?scope=all&utf8=%E2%9C%93&state=all

I didn't see a community/forum at the GitHub site to get peer support,
but there are forums back at the pan site which operate as mailing
lists. Be sure to be far more detailed there than you were here.

> What other news readers are recommended?

I don't use Linux for personal use, and haven't touched it for decades
at work. The ones I see others using on Linux are:

pan (no idea what's wrong with it for you)
Thunderbird (visit their newsgroup to get help)
Gnus
tin
Claws Mail
Sylpheed
slrn

And then there's using a Windows NNTP client running on WINE.

Pan from my distro's repository * is working here. I am posting this with
it.
* Linux Mint 21.2 Cinnamon 64-bit.
* Pan 0.149 "Bellevue".

Pan is based on Fortรฉ Agent and on Gravity. You might like Fortรฉ Agent.
Fortรฉ Agent runs under Wine on Linux.

Gravity: Windows. |

All are Windows programs. The OP said he is using Linux. Fox and I
mentioned he could use a Windows NNTP client under WINE on Linux, but
I'm not sure he wants to bother with that setup.

As I recall, Xnews does not support SSL, so you have to chain it through
sTunnel to make secure connects to NNTP servers. No support for UTF-8,
either. No official announcement Xnews was discontinued, but the web
site disappeared in 2014, and the program was already 5 years old by
then. You can find old copies of the Newsguy site for Xnews at
archive.web.com (I didn't bother to check if the download links still
worked), like:

https://web.archive.org/web/20141227184804/http://xnews.newsguy.com/

Long ago when I trialed Xnews, I reported some problems and some RFEs
(Requests for Enhancement). The author didn't care as he stated the
program was only designed for his use, he didn't care about its use by
other users although he made it available to others. He expressed no
interest in making his program fixed or better for others.

40tude Dialog got abandoned back in 2002, with 1 update in 2005 (don't
remember from who), and another bad update that made you go back to the
prior one. I use Dialog, but it won't natively run on Linux.

Well, you didn't really need to know in what way pan stopped working.
It just refused to show me anything, I got a blank screen. I wanted
to know whether others had problems with it.

I use pan on my Linux desktop at home. It does have bugs, which
haven't bothered me enough to brush off my gdb skills from yore.

Glad to see your post. What did you see in pan?

(I get occasional freezing. Also, it doesn't

Just silly. Pasting on a huge extra layer, just to read news.

slrn and alpine can both read and display news. Both are text based, not
graphics, I do not use gui for news reaer but there are lots of gui news
readers as well.

Which I mentioned TWICE before your reply which you conveniently snipped
out my mention of WINE. Mentioned WINE in my 1st reply to the OP, and
again in my reply to Geordie (that you snipped). You're just
duplicating what Fox and I already said. We'll have to wait to see if
the OP is willing to use a Windows NNTP client atop of WINE. The NNTP
client will run slower using WINE, but performance may not matter,
especially if the OP is visiting text-only newsgroup. Might incur
longer waits if the OP is visiting binaries, and configures the NNTP
client to download all new messages instead of just those he selects to
read. We don't know if the purpose for the OP is to just read text
newsgroups, or also do binaries.

You must be a very fussy person. What do you mean by saying "not as nice, I feel"? How does a nice thing look like? There is nothing nice in this world but people get by what they have. If you are fed up of Thunderbird then you'll remain without a news-client for the rest of your life. People normally choose one and stick with it. News groups are mostly for trolling and having arguments about silly things in life. There is nothing useful or "nice"here.

For completeness and for your info I am using Thunderbird and I have no reasons to complain about it. You get updates every other week but you can install them or not bother with them like I do. For Firefox, you now get updates every 3 days; They have gone crazy these days.

You can install WINE in Linux Ubuntu and use Forte Agent reliably, but
you can't use SSL connections for NNTP and POP3 connections. The last free
edition of Forte Agent is 3.3. You can buy version 8.00 for $29.00 and get
monthly access to NNTP for $2.95 per month with up to 25 GB of data
access.

I use Pan and slrn. What does "acting up" mean? Which version are you using,
which OS?

Pan is the best graphical newsreader in Linux, IMHO. If you're using an old
version, then you're better off upgrading and seeing if that fixes whatever
issue you're having.

I'm confused. Seems okay to me. db started a thread, and Moock replied

As you've been told, Emacs is an enormous do-everything package,
including the dirty dishes in your kitchen. Gnus is in that package.

apt can only locate packages among the package sources you've told your
system to search in. There may come a time that you look for the package
source yourself and download it manually and then run dpkg or another
package manager to install it.

Honestly, I just prefer Thunderbird because the quoting looks nicer and
you can download all messages for offline reading.

Am I the only one in the world who uses knode? Years ago I decided I
like it better than pan, but I don't remember the reasons.

I used Knode 20 years ago and liked it. I liked the original Pan of
that time too, but the modern rewrite of Pan was too full of problems
for me to persevere with it.

I'm an unreconstructed Mac user now, wedded to my ancient MacSOUP.

I really liked Knode. As KDE does, they have removed it (unsupported) and
it's gone from Debian repos. Seems many think, "just use Thunderbird for
news", but it's not a good newsreader in my opinion.

Pan was nice, but now it doesn't show buttons on windows for me, and other
problems. I've given up on Pan now.

I'm using Sylpheed, which I like, but I find it irritating when it checks
groups while you're reading a message, then that message gets marked as read,
and disappears from the headers (using Show Unread). Going back to look for
it is a pain. Other than that, it's not too bad.

knode is still available in Opensuse 15.5 - not in the default
distribution, but in one of their subsidiary repositories.

Yes, kde do seem to have a rather microsoftish view of what users
need/want.

I'll have to look into that. I'd like to run it (knode) if I can, even
just to mess with it.

Btw, I also miss OS/2 Newsreader/2 :)
