I can only get rid of the problem by rebooting the computer. Killing
Xnews and restarting does not solve it. Once I reboot, it may not
happen again for several days. Before this began occurring a couple
weeks ago, I had been using Xnews for several months without any
problem.
I see that there was another thread started on Feb 11 regarding this
problem but there was no resolution listed.
I'm using Xnews v2005.10.18. My OS is XP Pro, version 5.1.2600 SP 2
Build 2600 on a HP xw6200 workstation with 5 GB RAM, dual 3.6 Xeon's
and lots of available disk storage.
if rebooting the operating system fixes the problem then one would
assume that it is operating system problem.
have you installed any new software or hardware lately?
> Occasionally, when I click on an article containing an image
IIRC, the clipboard is used as a place for Xnews to hold the picture in
order to display it. You might try to add the line:
Jpeg=0
to the Xnews.ini file to disable Xnews' internal display feature, then
set up Xnews to use an external image viewer/program to view graphic
attachments.
HTH,
John
It seems to be related to clipboard utilities not working and
playing well with Xnews.

You assume it's an O/S problem but you ask about everything else. Are
you confused?

Dood, it's Windows. Everything you install has an effect on the OS, due to
the Registry.

you are the one that is confused.
I never said "I assumed", I said "one would assume"

Thanks, Mike. From the information at the link you posted, it seems
like this is a problem that has existed for several years and quite a
lot of people have experienced it. I'm not running any 'special'
clipboard utility but I do have Office 2000 installed and I see that
several of the posts about this problem point to some adverse
relationship between Xnews, running Office 2000 programs and the
clipboard. There's several ideas that I'll check on. It's entirely
possible that the problem may have only been occurring while an
Office program is open. I leave Outlook 2000 open a lot. I also
noticed since my OP that Xnews can sometimes start working again
without a reboot. I never noticed that before. Maybe it's because I
had shut down Outlook. At least I now have something to go on and a
few other things to watch. Thanks again.

Thanks for the 'work-around', John, but I think it would be a hassle
to have to view images in a separate app. The Xnews problem is
sporadic, so I'd rather put up with it right now than create a
separate viewer. I'm also checking out the possible problem with MS
Office as suggested by Mike.

NO hardware but I'm always installing software; esp. MS patches! :(
I doubt that it's an OS problem. No application other than Xnews is
misbehaving and, according to the link that Mike posted
(http://tinyurl.com/32tlp ), the symptoms that I'm experiencing have
been experienced by other people as far back as 2002.

Office 2000 has a special clipboard utility, but it can be turned
off.

Dude, I dare say that I have more experience with Windows than anyone
else here - from Windows 3.0 to Windows 2003 Datacentre, and most of
what I read people saying on Usenet about Windows is absolute rubbish.
I also hire and manage people who support people using Windows. Pretty
much everything changling has posted is absolute rubbish, and he's doing
a disservice to the original posters.

Saying that the Registry is the worst thing about Windows is not "rubbish".
Somewhere, I still have every version of Windows, from 1.0 to 2K (not to
mention, MSDOS 1.0 thru 6.22 (excluding 1.25, I missed that one, but it was
only out a few months before 2.0)). So, I guess I go farther back than you
do. =P
But, I'll stand by my statement. The Registry is Windows' biggest downfall.

No, but you didn't say that. I've snipped nothing so you can see. I
might even agree with you, slightly. Not being able to _easily_ backup
and restore the registry is the worse thing. I recently had to do a
full rebuild of a server because the software hive was corrupt. Full
daily backups weren't even of any help. Which reminds me I must build
something for booting into recovery console and archiving all the hives.

LOL. I was using CP/M and VMS before Windows. I may have used version
of Windows prior to 2.0 but I wasn't supporting it. let's not even talk
about OS/2 and CTOS.
But anyway you'll only impress me if you've got them all as working
virtual machines. To hand I have MSDOS6.22\Win3.11, Win95, Win98SE,
WinME, Windows NT Workstation and Server, Windows 2000 workstation and
server, and possibly Windows 2003 server. The Win9x series are
especially useful for running old directx games.

Grow up Frank.
Thanks for the giggle. Pathetic really, but still somewhat funny.

I remember playing with 1.0 on a 2 meg laptop, while running Desqview

No Autocoder on 1400 series mainframes?

No, but FAP on 7090 and MAP on 7094 (I did have a buddy who found it
more convenient to code in machine language on the 1400 than in
Autocoder).
This was back when one big deal was going from a 2 microsecond cycle
time to 1 microsecond. It was a real leap forward when citing speed in
frequencies got to be more convenient than using cycle times :-)

Nutshell: I'm having the same "Cannot Open Clipboard" issue on my WIn
2k3 Server (all latest Service packs and hotfixes) and I do not have
any special 3rd party software on it - in fact it's a Domain Controller
for my network at home...
So Office is ruled out...
3rd party apps - gone.. (aside from Xnews)
And to throw EVERYTHING into a loop, I use Xnews via Remote Desktop so
I'm not even in front of the server here...
What's odd is I wonder if how the pic was posted encoding wise had
anything to do with it as it typically only happens with JPG pics and I
can find groups it works fine with and others you can't even view one
pic of. Even add to it that I can fix the problem as it typically
stops trying to DL that message at a few % - and if you click Stop -
you can move onto the next pic. No needing to reboot... It gets bad
enough that I've wanted to look for another NNTP alternative but none
seem to offer that double click the post to decode and view the pic
internally to the news reader yet...

So it's happening on an XP workstation and the W2K3 DC; I'd have a look at
GPOs then and see what you're disabling.
