Mixmin, Eternal September, and others - anyone know what's CHANGED with
Stunnel configuration files or the Stunnel Server?

Stunnel has been working fine for me for quite a while.

But as of yesterday, Stunnel seems to have died for some reason.

Do you know what has changed?
a. Is the Stunnel Server down?
b. Did they change the config file syntax?
c. What's a good workaround?

I had the same problem yesterday so I switched to netfront on port 119.

There may be something wrong with the stunel server which I saw somewhere
was under a hacking attack.

Maybe they shut stunel down temporarily?

That's exactly what it means. Your stunnel.conf file has an
error.

Comment out all the configured sections like below.

;[gmail-pop3]
;client = yes
;accept = 127.0.0.1:110

;checkHost = pop.gmail.com
;OCSPaia = yes

Starting and stopping, add each back in until it fails by
removing the semi-colons. Then fix the faulty entry.

The "stunnel server" doesn't exist. It's the remote host you
are connecting to.

Or when they use some archaic software that does not allow to configure
the port number, only the server name. And thus always connects to
port 119, even when localhost is used as the server.

Remember, when the software was good and modern, it would not require
the use of stunnel at all.
