Setup|Misc: Click the "Make Xnews your default newsreader" button.
I have done it with the current version of Xnews and IE5.5.
I hope it works with earlier versions of IE too.
Otherwise you will need a registry patch.

Would somebody post such a registry patch? Xnews is not in the options list
for my version of IE5.5. I'm comfortable mucking around in the registry as
long as I know what I'm putting in:-)

The following was posted here a while ago.
It allows xnews to be an extra "handler" of news urls.
You will probably need to edit the paths.
=======
Select and copy the text below this line (*****) and edit it in a
text editor like Notepad. Check whether end-of-lines are not
truncated, nor cut by a carriage return. Then, name and save the
file with a ".reg" extension, like: "XnewsByDefault.reg". Don't
forget the quotations (" "). Finally, right-click on the file and
select the command MERGE. The content of the file enters your
registry. XNews has now become your default newsreader program.

I tried the registry patch as is (my Xnews is on D:\) and although Xnews
shows up as the Default Newsgroup Program in Internet Options, I get this
error when clicking on a link to a Newsgroup:

news://news.whatever.etc This file does not have a program associated with
it for performing this action. Create an association in My Computer by
clicking View and then clicking Folder Option.

Clicking OK brings up this box:
Microsoft Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer cannot open this helper application for
news://news.whatever.etc. The protocol specified in this address is not
valid. Make sure the address is correct, and try again.

Any suggestions as to how to get this working? Thanks.

news:// is linking to a news-server not a group.
Unfortunately, the patch doesn't work with this type of addresses.
