I am tempted to use Gravity as my default reader as it has all the bells
and whistles I require. However it takes ages to get new headers on
startup. It seems to download them one at a time and displays them as
'jobs' at the bottom of the window. I don't think I am downloading bodies
so what setting do I need to change, or is that just the way it is?

Something is definitely bad, as I use Grivity for years
and I do not observe slow header fetching.

I would advice to ask for help at Gravity dedicated forum
