I started with thunderbird, thinking that it would be a good way to have
a news client. I subscribed to a few groups that I follow and it seemed
too work. Now, I look for new messages, and thunderbird tells me there
are no new messages in comp.lang.c, for example, for 3 days running.
That doesn't happen.

Can anyone think of why thunderbird isn't getting new messages?
TIA

Frank expressed an opinion:

Using Tb3, I just subscribed and found over a many messages for the last
few days, including almost a dozen from today.

Try right-click the newsgroup name, Properties, Rebuild Index.

Thanks, Kris, that might do it. It still seems wonky tho. For example,
when I send this and "get mail," it will have 1 unread message. I'll
read my own message and then *still* have 1 unread. ??

It didn't happen that time. Never mind.

I've had that problem. I would Rebuild Index occasionally, with partial,
sometime success. I got to know which groups currently had their counters
screwed up.I don't know of a real fix.

The problem *did* stop bothering me when I switched to Dialog, though.

It's most likely because the original author, Marcus Mnnig, has had a
lifestyle change and moved on to other things. ISTM someone said a new
important job.

The program is being watched over by a several benefactors who have made
some fixes and updates, but don't have the desire to do a port to other
OSes. (You might want to look into the .84 release.)

It works just fine for me:
Ubuntu 8.04/GNOME and Wine 1.0 for 2.0.15.84
Install the msttcorefonts first, if you haven't.

Actually, beta 84 is the last closed beta that was released by Marcus.
Nobody else has the access to the source.

What I repeated above was what was said in one of these groups some
little time ago. I figured it would be true.

Of course! Isn't everything on teh Usenets and teh Interwebs th'
troot???

(Real answer: as I recall, the person making the comment was one of the
benefactors now shepherding the product. But hey, I'm old now and may be
misremembering. Please don't shoot the messenger!)
