BUG: NN poorly handles TTY adjusting characters

Has anyone else experienced the issue with current NN that if someone
has multi-byte characters or non-standard characters in their messages,
and these break down into characters that do things to the TTY or
display in ASCII or 8-bit extended charsets, that NN starts failing to
correctly redraw the screen?

Does anyone know of any workaround for this issue, or do I just need to
patch it to handle a better character set?
