I need some help in how to subscribe to news groups that interest me.
I would like to get into some groups like golf, vet medicine, books,
current events and computers. Does anyone have any ideas.

I'm new at this so I don't even know if thi will get through.

It got through, and go to http://tile.net/news for a complete list that
you can search by subject. You might want to take a look at my site
http://members.tripod.com/~holden/index.html for more info.

You got through, Lori. The method I am going to describe to you may
take a while to accomplish, but it is the most accurate method of
subscribing. If you are using Netscape version 2.x of higher, it is the
exact way of doing it. If you are using another browser, it should be
similar.

1. Place your mouse on "Options" in the desktop menu. Click once.

2. Go to the selector marked "Mail and news preferences" and click on
that.

3. Go to the line showing "Show all newsgroups" and click on that.

4. Get yourself a cup of coffee, tea, or whatever and sit back and
relax. It's going to take a little time to load them all.

5. When you see "Document Done" at the bottom of your screen, you are
now ready to make you selections.

6. In the left top window, identified as "News Server" you will see the
name of all the news groups your server's news feed carries. At the
very left of that window are folder icons, if there are subgroups within
that folder. If there is a plus mark to the left of the icon, it means
there are groups within that folder that you might want to look at.
Click on the plus mark to list the subgroups, click on the minus sign to
close that folder.

7. If you wish to subscribe to the group, there will be a box just to
the right of the name of the group. Click in that box to subscribe. A
check mark will show up, indicating that you have subscribed.

8. When you have made you selections, go back up to the "options"
selector and click on it..

9. Go down to the line allowing you to "see subscribed groups" and
click on that.

10. You are all done and every time you enter your news reader, your
subscribed groups will be displayed.

A couple of notes:

a. If you are choosing a large number of news groups to read, as I do,
they will not always take the first time. If that happens, just make a
few selections as shown above and exit the reader. Go back into it and
if those few choices have worked, add as many more as you wish and
you'll be all set. And relax. Once you have initially loaded the full
list of groups, it doesn't take that load to reload them.

b. Under your "File" selector you will see a line marked "Get new news
groups". You might wish to click on this periodically, like once a
month or so, to see if any new groups have been added by your server.

There are thousands of news groups in which you may read and
participate, so set it up the right way in the beginning and enjoy
yourself.
