This is an old copy of the document, but it should provide some
good information on the topic. The author of the article is preparing
a new version which he will have on the World-Wide Web.

TO SAVE USENET BINARY MESSAGES AND DECODE THEM FOR USE.

==============================

1. Introduction.

I will endeavour to post this info to the following news groups on
a regular basis under the heading:-
HOW TO:uudecode/view binary usenet messages
- comp.binaries.ibm.p.d
- alt.binaries.pictures.d
- alt.binaries.pictures.utilities
- new.newusers.questions

I do NOT send this faq to people on request but will endevour to help
on binary topics, where I can.

I have NOT got an automatic reply server, so sending an empty email
message will get you nowhere.

Some sites listed here may not have the file I have listed as the site
may move or delete files. The sites and files listed here were correct
at the time I last checked and/or when I downloaded the files sought for
my own use. I am not responsible if the files are not at the sites mentioned
as I do not control the sites and I can not possibly keep track of every
site I mention in this faq.

This information will, depending on the type of Internet Access you
have and the software you run aid you in decoding multiple binary
files/messages. If anyone has any suggestions for alterations to this then
they are welcome to respond. This faq is specific to DOS and Windows and
is aimed to help newbies save binaries from the newsgroups. If anyone
wants a repost of this faq at any time then let me know. This information
is constantly being updated and added to.

This is NOT intended to replace any existing FAQ's on this topic, but
to purely assist everyone/anyone. Other known faqs and postings and
their locations are listed at the end of this document and more added as
I am told about them.

I welcome Shareware Vendors/Authors to send me details of their products
if they wish it to be entered in this faq, the only stipulation is that
it fits in with the topics covered here and that they keep me informed
of any updates to their products. I am also more than willing to test
any Encoders/Decoders if required to do so. If it is NAGWARE then it will
be listed here as such.

There are several methods of extracting messages, binaries etc from the
messages, I will endeavour to cover the methods I know of.

I have also experimented with sending/receiving binaries via E-Mail
and have written a little bit of info on that topic, specific to
Windows/Slip/PPP and Windows email readers only. My experiments have been
done using Pronto/IP, Pegasus, Chameleon Email, Trumpet News and News
Xpress and Windows 95 Exchange in conjunction with Wincode for uudecoding
some received files.

My personal preference is using News Xpress as my news reader, Wincode
as a decoder, Stuffit for Windows for Binhex files and my Email program is
Microsoft Exchange running under Beta of Windows 95. Hopefully the
Microsoft exhange will take over the email process when I get the
full version, and Netscape as a browser only and certainly NOT as a
news reader. As a graphic viewer I use Lview Pro and always the
latest version, (apart from version 1C of LviewPro which is NAGWARE).
Programs such as Corel and Photoshop/Photostyler etc will also
handle GIF's, TIF's and JPEG's.

==============================

2. UUdecode.

This is if you do NOT have a News Reader that can handle automatic decoding:-

To convert the usenet binary messages into a usable format.
First: Save the usenet message in numerical order as it is posted. In
this case the message (in binary format was a 4 part file called
LCCAPE.GIF) was in five parts with 0/4 (often) being the introduction
to the file consisting of no binary to uudecode.

These files I saved as lcc1.txt, lcc2.txt, lcc3.txt and lcc4.txt. I
could also have called it anything at all and also could have had .gif
extension instead of .txt extension.

Without using a Smart Decoder you will have to strip off the extra text
above and below (where necessary) on each of the saved binary messages.
(an simple example of how to do this is shown below).

==============================

3. Sample UUencoded File.

EXAMPLE FILE I HAVE USED BELOW IS LCCAPE.GIF 0/4 - 4/4
Below are three cut saved usenet binaries.
The first is how to cut the first of a series,
The second is how to cut all but the first and last,
The third is how to cut the last of a series.

4. Anonymous FTP.

Most sites listed here are anonymous FTP sites. FTP to either the name
eg. oak.oakland.edu or you can use its IP address. You will login as
anonymous and use your email address as the password. You will have to
change directories on most occasions if you are usinf a terminal FTP client.

(Example) oak.oakland.edu [141.210.10.117]
Simtel/win3/graphics/lviewp1b.zip
This example shows the site name followed in brackets by the IP address
followed by a series of directories separated by a "/". In most
occasions I have put the filename and dos extension after the last
directory eg. /graphics/lviewp1b.zip

Some Commands for some terminal ftp programs:
open sitename or IP address to open an ftp connection
cd .. to go up one directory
cd directory_name to go down one
cd directory_name/directory_name to go down two
dir to give a directory listing
bin to change to binary mode
hash to show ### as file is downloading
get filename.xxx to retrieve the file

Some of the windows ftp programs support drop and drag or just double
click to retrieve the file. ws_ftp and Chameleon's ftp support this.

5. Decoders.

Examples of uudecoders and smart uudecoders for Dos/Windows:-
Wncode26.zip Version 2.6.6 the latest (IMHO The Best decoder for Windows)
UUMaster V 4.01
UU31.zip or UU33.zip
ENUU21.zip
xferp100.zip
uuexe532.zip
uuexe525.zip

Most of these will be found on the major ftp sites.
Simtel's own site: ftp.coast.net
oak.oakland.edu and mirrors.
There is an entire directory, /SimTel/msdos/decode, dedicated to
these programs.

Smart Decoders
WINCODE266
Snappy Software now have a fixed IP (snappy.globalone.net) with a Linux
Server running from midnight to noon Eastern Standard Time each day.
(NOT 24 Hours) You can visit our HomePage at: http://snappy.globalone.net
OR you can request an auto-emailed copy by sending a BLANK message to:
sna...@snappy.globalone.net.

The HomePage has all our updated info as well as other key contact e-mail
address through which users can obtain the latest info immediately
(auto-reply). We have set up anonFTP, an auto-email-fileserver and a
HomePage to allow users many options to contact us.

NOTE: Those that have ordered the Wincode Help file and have not
received it should contact Snappy via this Home page and can receive
the help file automatically via email.

Snappy has released Wincode v2.6.5 which does have BINHEX decoding but
not encoding.

WINPACK, WINPACK DELUXE & WINPACK DELUXE32 This program is also mentioned
in the Mac to PC heading as it supports Binhex encoded files..

Current features of WinPack32 Deluxe, and WinPack Deluxe v.80 BETA.
WinPack is a shareware ZIP utility, designed to eliminate the need to
shell out to DOS equivalents. We felt the need for a ZIP package that
would run completely under windows, with all functions self contained.
We hope that Winpack meets with these goals. WinPack Deluxe supports
ZIP, GZIP, ARC, LHARC, ARJ, TAR, ZOO, COMPRESS, FREEZE, BINHEX, PACK,
PACKIT, MIME, UUENCODE, DECODE, and a few others. WinPack is developed
by AshSoft and distributed by RetroSpect

MPACK/MUNPACK
Is a smart decoder that handles both MIME and uuencode formats.
Base64 decoder for dos
ftp.andrew.cmu.edu:pub/mpack/mpack15d.zip
Versions are included for unix, pc, os2, mac, amiga and archimedes
systems.

UU
An extremely smart and fast decoder for DOS. UU will extract multiple
files and multiple sections in multiple files. The sections and files
need NOT be in order as UU will read all files and create a map before
extracting. Without 'begin' lines UU will read 'Subject:' headings etc
to try to determine the file/section name and position.
ftp://ftp.coast.net/SimTel/msdos/decode/uu40s.zip

Jim Tucker <jtu...@byron.apana.org.au> has written three DOS programs
which enable binary files to be emailed in ASCII format without
requiring decoding. The target files are similar to UUE however they are
executable text (.COM files) and therefore no decoding software is
required. The source files are limited to ~52K, however the programs
include a built-in UUEncoder and an ASCII format decoder for larger
files.

NETSEND
The source file is converted to a self-extracting ASCII file. Executing
the ASCII file extracts the original binary file (data or program).

ftp://ftp.coast.net/SimTel/msdos/decode/netsend1.zip

NETRUN
The source program (.COM or .EXE) is converted to a program in ASCII
text format. Executing the text file will run the program! Command line
parameters for the original program can be used. Errorlevel exits are
preserved.

ftp://ftp.coast.net/SimTel/msdos/decode/netrun31.zip

NETPIC
Converts a .GIF file into an viewable ASCII program. When the ASCII text
is executed the program displays the original GIF picture as 320x200x256
colors. The recipient does NOT need decoding OR VIEWING software. Includes
automatic resizing of larger pictures.

ftp://ftp.coast.net/SimTel/msdos/graphics/netpic32.zip

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This is a plain (not very smart but small) DOS UUdecoder written by
Jim Tucker <jtu...@byron.apana.org.au> which can be emailed as plain
ASCII text. This solves the chicken and egg problem -- how to mail a
UUdecoder to somebody who does not have a UUdecoder. The program which
created this, NETRUN, is available on SimTel and mirror sites:
SimTel/msdos/decode/netrun31.zip. Follow the instructions below and
enter MUUD for help.

THE FOLLOWING text is an executable NETRUN program. It does NOT
require decoding.

Netcom:-
There seems to be an impression abroad among newbie Netcruiser users
that Netcruiser is some sort of net-wide thing. It isn't. It's
proprietary to Netcom, and, percentage-wise, very few people on the net
know a damn thing about it. You have just posted your question of very
narrow interest to a global newsgroup, where people in Australia, New
Zealand and Austria may be scratching their heads wondering what in the
hell you're talking about.

Because of this, Netcom has gone to a bit of trouble to set up
newsgroups specifically for Netcruiser customers, I suggest you use
them first before pestering me.

6. MIME. (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions)

MIME/Base64 decoding is included in some Email programs. Programs such
as Wincode (mentioned above) can handle MIME/Base 64 and also
MPACK/MUNPACK as mentioned below.

For more information on MIME you can read the newsgroup or get the
faqs, (3 parts) from one of the following:-

- It is posted approximately monthly to the newsgroups comp.mail.mime,
comp.answers, and news.answers. The "Expires:" field is set such
that---on systems which honor this field---the most recent edition
will always be in the news spool.

- Many sites archive news.answers postings, including these:

ftp://ftp.uu.net/usenet/news.answers/mail/mime-faq/
ftp://rtfm.mit.edu/pub/usenet-by-group/news.answers/mail/mime-faq/
Mirror at ftp.cs.ruu.nl.

mpack/munpack
Is a smart decoder that handles both MIME and uuencode formats.
Base64 decoder for dos
ftp.andrew.cmu.edu:pub/mpack/mpack15d.zip
Versions are included for unix, pc, os2, mac, amiga and archimedes
systems.

Mpack and munpack are utilities for encoding and decoding
(respectively) binary files in MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail
Extensions) format mail messages. For compatibility with older forms
of transferring binary files, the munpack program can also decode
messages in split-uuencoded format. The Macintosh version can also
decode messages in split-BinHex format.

To decode a MIME message, first save it to a text file. If possible,
save it with all headers included. Munpack can decode some MIME files
when the headers are missing or incomplete, other files it cannot
decode without having the information in the headers. In general,
messages which have a statement at the beginning that they are in MIME
format can be decoded without the headers. Messages which have been
split into multiple parts generally require all headers in order to be
reassembled and decoded.

Some LAN-based mail systems and some mail providers (including America
Online, as of the writing of this document) place the mail headers at
the bottom of the message, instead of at the top of the message. If
you are having problems decoding a MIME message on such a system, you
need to convert the mail back into the standard format by removing the
system's nonstandard headers and moving the standard Internet headers
to the top of the message (separated from the message body with a
blank line).

There must be exactly one message per file. Munpack cannot deal with
multiple messages in a single file, to decode things correctly it must
know when one message ends and the next one begins.

To decode a message, run the command:

munpack file

where "file" is the name of the file containing the message. More than
one filename may be specified, munpack will try to decode the message in
each file. For more information on ways to run munpack, see the
documentation that comes with mpack/munpack.

7. Graphic Viewers.

The most common of these usenet binary messages are in JPEG and GIF
format. There are also some which have been compressed with pkzip,
normally pk204g.exe version.

To be able to view the JPEG and GIF files once decoded you will need
some sort of viewer. There are several viewers for DOS and windows.
Some viewers will view both JPEG and GIF, others only one format.
Some will convert from one format to other formats. Some times
viewers are also posted to alt.binaries.pictures.utilities.
But here are some viewers that I have found to work well.

8. Newsreaders.

If you are on a slip or PPP connection you could be using a mail/news
reading program such as one of the Newsreaders below. Using these
newsreaders will enable you to uudecode most binary messages from your
newsreader. On most it is just a matter of hold shift key and
multiple selecting the files eg 1/4, 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4 and hit the
extract key, confirm the directory to save the extracted file and it
will automatically uudecode. There will be the odd one that they
cannot decode, these can be saved to file and possibly uudecoded
with one of the decoders mentioned above. Some problems include
faulty files, incomplete files and files not in correct order before
extracting. If this happens try saving to disk and uudecoding using
another method eg wincode. With Trumpet Newsreader try altering the
sort order by selecting subject from the view menu.

Shell account users may be using Unix Newsreaders provided by the host
computer. Some of these now have smart decoders built in. Nn, Rn, Trn,
and Tin all have these included in the program, and it's a simple
matter to see, get, and uudecode files, without even leaving your
newsreader. Location of faqs for these are listed later.

A new generation of smart uudecoders are becoming popular now, and these
are multiple part smart decoders, Unpost being the most popular and
widely distributed of these. With Unpost, you can save all the parts of
all the posts that you want to decode to a single file, and do all the
decoding in one shot automatically, much faster then you could any other
way. This is the easiest way to decode many files at the same time,
and can reduce the amount of time you spend decoding pics to a tenth
of what it would be otherwise (depending on how many you are decoding).
With unpost, you can even read all the posts right off the news spool, so
you don't even have to load a newsreader at all. (Unpost can be found
via WWW at http://www.csn.net/~jstevens/, or on FTP site
ftp.netcom.com:/pub/ha/hagie/unpost/unpost.zip) Unpost will work on Dos
machines as well.

9. Unarchivers (.zip, gunzip, tar)

You may also need to get other programs for unarchiving files. Files
with filename extensions such as .zip, .z, .gz, and .tar are covered here.
But there may also be others that have been compressed with LHA, ZOO or
ARJ. The most recent file names for these are lha255b.exe, zoo210.zip and
arj241a.exe (use Archie to find them). Compress (comp430d.zip) will
uncompress some formats although I have not used it. (All the above are dos
programs. Winzip95.exe for Windows 95 now handles the above formats).

PKZIP (.zip)
The two pkzip programs are filenames pk204g.exe and pkz204g.exe, either
one will do The windows interface program has a file name of
winzip95.exe. (http://www.winzip.com/winzip/)

For new users using pkzip:
I would advise setting up a directory specifically for it, say C:\pkzip.
Download pk204g.exe and put it into this directory. At the dos prompt
type pk204g and it will self extract its 16 files.
READ THE TEXT FILES they will help.

Also set up another directory say C:\downloads. Put copy or move
pkzip.exe and pkunzip.exe from C:\pkzip into C:\downloads. Put any
newly downloaded files into downloads directory and at the dos prompt
to unzip eg. filename.zip type pkunzip filename.zip (do not forget the
space between pkunzip and filename.zip)

gunzip.exe & tar4dos.zip (For DOS)
For files with .gz or .z try using gunzip.exe, this will unzip both of
these formats. For files with .tar try tar4dos.zip. Both these files
are readily available on the main sites and normally in the archivers
directory. Your best option is to Telnet to and Archie, login as
Archie and type prog tar4dos.zip or prog gunzip.exe and it will tell
you which sites and which directories.

NOTE: Some files can be compressed with BOTH tar AND gzip giving both
the .tar and .z extensions in the file name.

10. Mac to PC Conversions.

There are several programs available for converting Mac files to use
on the PC. Although this is still not totally perfect it does allow
certain files to now be read on PC's. There are DOS converters to
convert Binhex files and also programs to convert .sit,.sea, and
several other formats. I do NOT personally use a Mac and the
information here may not be 100% accurate. (If anyone cares to correct
me, feel free). There also may be more up-to-date versions of the Dos
programs mentioned here.

A ".sea" file from a Mac does not indicate which particular compression
program this file was created by or originated from. The ".sea" suffix
is generic and merely means "self-extracting-archive" similar to an
executable zip file (if there is such a thing?).

Suffixes like ".cpt" and ".sit" are more explanatory for not only do
they tell you that the Mac file is compressed - these suffixes also
indicate the creators of those files (.sit = StuffIt, .cpt = Compact Pro)
There are many other compression programs for Mac but these two are
the most widely used and the most popular.

Since each compression program uses a slightly different compression
algorithm then each program needs a _particular_ algorithm to decompress
as well.

This is the inherent problem with the ".sea" file structure that for
a Mac user - he cares not which program created the ".sea" file as it
is an executable and will auto-run and decompress. But for a PC user
who cannot execute and run the file then you must need to know the creator
of the file to manually decompress by using a program for the PC made
to extract _that particular_ type of compression format used on that
_particular type_ of file.

11. Windows 95.

I have not got very much to put in here as yet but keep watching, I
am sure info will come to hand as time goes by.

Using Microsoft Exchange for sending Binary files is not a problem.
Exchange will send in Base 64/MIME or UUencoded format and also
receive in both Base64/MIME or UUencode. Beware with received
split files as they are almost inpossible to put back together, try
to get your sender to send a file completly rather than splitting it.

To set MS Exchange for UUE only go to Tools|Options|Services|Internet
Mail|Properties|Message Format|And de select the MIME option.

Graphic viewers for Windows 95:
ftp to ftp.std.com /ftp/vendors/mmedia/lview/
File lviewpro.zip contains LView Pro 1.C3, the current shareware
version for Windows 95 and Windows NT 3.51 with NewShell (also NAGWARE)

http://www.process.com/win95/win95ftp.htm
acdc125.zip (220 Kb)
Views most graphics files FAST! (I d/loaded this one and it's great!)

polyv200.zip (2.52 Mb)
Polyview is a 32 bit image viewer for Windows 95 and NT.

Also a Windows 95 compression program Winzip95.exe is available on
ftp.winzip.com or http://www.winzip.com/winzip/

There is also a new REGISTRY FAQ which may be of use to Windows 95 users.
I have it split into three parts and will endevour to Post it to the
following groups from time to time, but the latest version can be aquired
from the sites listed by the Author and shown below:

12. Using Archie.

To find files one easy way if you know the file name or part of the
file name is to use Archie. If you have an Archie Client or your
Internet provider has one then use it, otherwise telnet to one of the
ones I have listed below. Log on as archie and to locate a program
just type in the filename or part file name preceded by prog and a
space. eg for lviewp1B.zip just type prog lviewp1B.zip.

If one Archie does not find your file, do not despair, try another
Archie. They do not all give the same results and some will find
files that others can not.

Some Archie Sites.
archie.cs.mcgill.ca 132.206.51.250 Canada
archie.funet.fi 128.214.6.102 Finland
archie.sogang.ac.kr 163.239.1.11 Korea
archie.switch.ch 130.59.1.40 Switzerland
archie.nctuccca.edu.tw Taiwan
archie.doc.ic.ac.uk 146.169.11.3 United Kingdom

SimTel files may obtained by e-mail from various ftp-mail servers
or through the BITNET/EARN file servers. For details send e-mail
to list...@SimTel.Coast.NET with this command in the body of the
message: get simtel-mailserver.info

Gopher users can access the collection through Gopher.Oakland.Edu.
World Wide Web (WWW) and Mosaic users can connect to the URL
http://www.acs.oakland.edu to access the files on OAK.Oakland.Edu.
