To view AVI/MPEG files on a MAC :

1) Go to this site:

Mac Orchard
http://www.spectra.net/~dsaur/orchard.html

2) You will need to download these files:

* vfw-11-utilities (contains an AVI to QT converter plus the avi
extension, also put the Windows Compressors 1.0 extension in the
extensions folder.
Also, run theIndeo® video R3.2 FAT installer and opt for re-start)
* uundo 1.0 decoder
* Sparkle-245 (Sparkle is for MPEG files)
* Quicktime 2.1 and related extensions
* MPack-1.5
* AVI->Quicktime Utility
* JPEG View and extensions
* UUlite
* Zipit
* Jade (works well with corrupted jpeg files)
* StuffitExpander

Look under "helpers" for most of these applications.

Sparkle should be used for .mpeg movies.
The procedure for .mpeg movies is the same as below for .avi movies,
but without the .avi->QT step.
Likewise find "MoviePlayer 2.1", it should be used for .avi movies.

3) Install vfw-11-utilites
(be sure you read the README, you must drag the AVI extension to your
extentions folder.)

.avi : do these steps :

(BTW - I download from my newsreader, Nuntius, not Netscape)

1) Downloaded the file. "Save" them.
Multi-part files can be saved as one file by holding down the
Shift key and dragging through the file names.

2a) For one part files, decode with MPack by dragging it to
the Mpack icon and dropping. It will say "Saving part 1 of 1",
when completed it will say "Found file...:, click save.

2b) For multi-part files use UUundo or UULite, the process is automatic
after you drag the file and drop it on the icon.

3) Convert the AVI to QT by dragging the decoded file ONTO the avi-qt
utility. You will have the option of then making a stand alone file
or one dependant on the AVI file. Either way works but you will have
to keep the associated files if you go the dependent route.
Best bet = standalone, you'll be using the disk space one way or another,
this way you only have to keep track of one file. If it was an .mpeg
file,
no need to do this step, after the MPack decode you should see a
Sparkle/Mpeg
icon ready for double clicking. Once in a while the icon doesn't change,
it looks like the MPack icon, it may be a decoded .mpeg, drag it to
the Sparkle icon instead of double clicking.
I don't know why this happens sometimes but......

4) Double click the .mpeg or .avi and it will play.
NOTE : some avi files are compressed using the new Indeo IV4.1,
this is not available for Mac yet, you will not be able to view those
files.
Also, some mpegs have a new sound type and you can't view those on a Mac,
unless you drop it on MPEGSplit Fat, which will remove the muxxed sound
file.
The resulting Mpeg will be viewable.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
.gl files work the same way. You do everything as above,
except after the MPack decode, drag and drop it on an app called
"GLMacAnim View 1.1" the folder it comes in is called "MAV_1.1_Only
Folder".
Set the memory partition of this app to 2M. Set your browser to:
http://mrcnext.cso.uiuc.edu/~deej/index.html
macanimviewer1.1.cpt.hqx (379438) is the file you want.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Basic non-Base 64 .jpeg files should be opened in Nuntius so you can see
the binaries.
Simply do "Extract Binaries" from the file menu. Drag to JPEG View.

To view multi part .jpegs or Base 64 .jpegs, do as above, download,
(Save them, not extract), UUundo decode them and view with JPEG View.
(there is an extension with JPEG View also)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
.zip files : Download them all to your desktop.
For single part files do the MPack decode, drag it to MPack,
then drag and drop the octet stream this created onto Stuffit Expander.
(This is a updated version, the Stuffit Engine extension, v. 3.5.2, does
the work.
Set your browser to :
http://mrcnext.cso.uiuc.edu/~deej/index.html
StuffIt_Expander_3.5.2_Install.hqx (189965) is the file you want.)
If the file is an .avi, drag and drop on .avi->quicktime utility.

Multi part files should be saved as one file and decoded with
UUundo or UULite, then unzipped, converted and viewed.
