This will tickle the memories of longtime readers of these groups...

From the current (Jan. 14) issue of Linn's Stamp News:

'STAMPS.COM' NAME EMBROILED IN LAWSUIT
by Rob Haeseler

"In a Federal courtroom in Texas, a legal battle is being waged over the
Internet domain name stamps.com."

[John Stuart Harper of Spokane WA claims that he and his wife
Kathy registered the name in 1994.]

"The Harpers claim that Houston stamp dealer Gregory K. Deeter stole the
name from them in 1998 and sold it to Stamps.com Inc., the
computerized-postage company in Santa Monica, Calif."

[...]

"[Deeter] told Linn's that he believes the American Philatelic Society is
behind the lawsuit, a charge the society denies."

"Deeter was expelled from the APS in 1999 for what the society termed
'conduct unbecoming a member.'"

[...]

"It was the society's first disciplinary case involving a member's
Internet manners."

"In 1998, Deeter was embroiled in an acrimonious Internet debate over
splitting the chat group rec.collecting.stamps into two distinct chat
rooms to keep stamp dealing out of the general discussion of stamp
collecting."

[...]

A *chat group*? Harrumph! But boy, does this bring back memories. :-/

Also known as soliciting votes with a bribe. This is the case we were
discussing today. Sounds like he's up to his old tricks.

Gotta wonder how all this happened though, sounds interesting.
