I think he was joking; in any case, I have never seen the "heresy"
argument used successfully against any proposal. Those who have been
around for a while may recall that said argument backfired seriously
against the opponents of the soc.religion.islam.ahmadiyya proposal
back in '93; hundreds of people who had no interest in the proposal
and have taken no interest in the newsgroup since, were enthused to
vote for it simply because it became a referendum against
fundamentalism.
