Does anybody know a search engine that helps people find
appropriate newsgroups for particular topics of interest?

Searching Google Groups
Another thing to do would be a Google Groups search for a newsgroup by
the topic you are interested in. Enter a word or two that describes
your topic of choice into the search box. The search should return a
list of newsgroups that are most likely to discuss the topic you are
interested in, along with some sample articles containing your search
terms.
That no longer works. Google Groups has been grossly broken for the
past several months, and moderately broken for a couple years. Long
ago a search would turn up lots of newsgroups. But then Google
added their own private groups, which would then appear mixed in
with newsgroups in the search results. Now it returns **only** its
own private groups among the search results, no newsgroups at all.
For example, just now I tried to search for newsgroups where I
could discuss W3C validation, and got this:
<http://groups.google.com/groups/search?q=W3C+validation&qt_s=Search+Groups>
which contains not a single mention of newsgroup:

Page 2 of the search results might be more to your liking.

One way to restrict the current form of Google Groups Advanced Search to
looking only in usenet groups is to specify possible hierarchies in the
box labled "Return only messages from the group at this location" - for
example
<http://groups.google.com/groups/search?as_q=w3c+validation&as_epq=&as_oq=&
as_eq=&num=10&scoring=&lr=&as_sitesearch=&as_qdr=&as_mind=1&as_minm=1&as_mi
ny=2009&as_maxd=1&as_maxm=1&as_maxy=2009&as_ugroup=comp.*,alt.*,microsoft.*
&as_usubject=&as_uauthors=&safe=off&sa=N&start=0>

Parsed search term

w3c validation group:comp.*,alt.*,microsoft.*

Putting more than three hierarchies in that box seems to confuse the
search.
