ArabTeX
Version

Description:
ArabTeX is a package extending the capabilities of TeX/LaTeX to generate
the Arabic writing from an ASCII transliteration for texts in several
languages using the Arabic script. It consists of a TeX macro package and
an Arabic font in several sizes, presently only available in the Naskhi
style. ArabTeX is primarily intended for generating the Arabic writing,
but the standard scientific transliteration can also be easily produced.
For languages other than Arabic that are customarily written in the Arabic
script some limited support is available. ArabTeX defines its own input
notation which is both machine, and human, readable, and suited for
electronic transmission and Email communication. However, texts in some of
the Arabic standard encodings can also be processed.

The Arabic Xterm
Version:

Description:
This software incorporates Arabic into an the MIT-Athena xterm for
windows. This will allow entering Arabic code in both 7-bit ASMO (ASMO449)
and 8-bit ISO8859-6 (ASMO708) as well as reading a full cursive Arabic
text. The xterm program is a terminal emulator for the X Window System. It
provides DEC VT102 and Tektronix 4014 compatible terminals for programs
that can't use the window system directly. The implementation is running
and stable except for few known minor bugs on display. The new environment
will allow the users of Unix to process Arabic in its two standards.
Unix Arabization should be a new breakthrough in the Arabization field and
will give Arabic computing a new dimension. The convenience of this
solution is it gives you an internationalization base without losing the
compatibility of the base system with the future development in the
operating systems. It provides the user with the flexibility of using more
than one language at the same time by simply popping two different window
from Arabic and English. This all without losing the computation power of
the Unix Os and its applications. This solution also provides a
transparent solution to problem of mailing in Arabic. With the lack of 8
bit standard mailer systems, the Arabized xterm provides a solution by
using the 7 bit Arabic feature. When the time come where 8 bit mailer
systems is the standard, the Arabized xterm can be simply used to send 8
bit Arabic. The Arabization of the operating system will become a matter
of using the alias commands to give a new names to the Unix commands. If
the user choose not to Arabize the Unix command he can always switch modes
by one function key stoke to change the mode of the Arabized xterm to
accept the Latin characters instead of the Arabic.

* Mule is a MULtilingual Enhancement to GNU Emacs. It can handle not only
ASCII characters (7 bits) and ISO Latin-1 (8 bits), but also Japanese,
Chinese, Korean (16 bits) coded in the ISO2022 standard and its variants
(e.g. EUC, Compound Text). For Chinese there is support for both GB and
Big5. In addition, Thai (based on TIS620), Vietnamese (based on VISCII and
VSCII), Arabic, and Ethiopic are also supported.
The mule 2.2 README says about Arabic:
Arabic and Persian are supported, but it uses special code and
fonts proper to Mule. To read and write Arabic text, you need
three fonts: etl16-arabic0.bdf (Arabic digits),
etl16-arabic1.bdf (narrow characters) and etl16-arabic2.bdf
(wide characters). These fonts are available in
`fonts/ETL.tar.gz' which is designed suitable for the use with
other ETL fonts. Read `Mule/Languages/Arabic Script Languages'
node in Info for the usage of arabic-mode.

The Arabic Tutor is a PC software that teaches Arabic for beginners using
the Microsoft Windows 3.1 or later operating system. It features a
user-friendly interface with sound that is a mouse-click away. The
alphabet are introduced in details with instructions of how to read and
write. Real words are introduced at an early stage as a build-up of
vocabulary and illustration of concepts. You can even take a listening
quiz at the terminal. No prior knowledge of Arabic is required and the
program is general in scope. It has 25 lessons including three surahs

Microsoft Windows with Arabic Support

Description:
It is more or less like the normal windows except it has two buttons on
the upper left: one with L (for Latin), the other with Ayn for Arabic. If
you want to write in Arabic, say in notepad, you click the Ayn. In some
wordprocessors, e.g. Ami Pro, you write and the letters are seperate until
you hit Enter - they take shape (one line at a time, no short vowels).
Now, the editor equivalent to Write (the simplified Windows word
processor) is called AWrite and is the only application where the menus
are in Arabic. It has a limited number of fonts and does not handle a few
marks (like dagger alif as in haathaa). You can write Arabic in paint
Brush. The character set used here (and the fonts) are not standard and
you can't import/export fronts from/to other applications. Some
applications (word processors) designed for normal windows may not work
well under this version of windows (due to the structure of
fonts/character sets). Most English apps work as advertised. Apart from
the above restrictions (and the lack of a powerful word processor), it
works for general purposes.

ParsNegar is a simple Windows program, much like an editor. Although it
can be used just like an editor, its purpose in life is to be used with
other Windows applications, like Word for Windows, AmiPro, WordPerfect,
PageMaker, CorelDRAW, Haravrd Graphics ... by taking advantage of Windows
copy and paste feature. You would typically type in your text in ParsNegar
and copy and paste it in your favorite Windows application.
It comes with two true type fonts. It lets you type from right to left. It
also manages the form of letter depending on what comes before it.
It supports Farsi/Persian and while doesn't come with any Arabic or Urdu
fonts, it can be configured to support these languages as well.
It allows you to use any Arabic/Farsi/Urdu Windows font once you define
the font layout. It also allows you to remap the keyboard. It lets you
print a keyboard layout on your printer. It even has a
on-screen-mouse-driven keyboard. Plus the other usual feature that all
great Windows application have like the toolbar, context sensitive online
help, status line and more importantly a secret screen!

This word processor is WorldScript I compatible, meaning with the proper
language scripts, you can create documents in Arabic, Persian, and Urdu.
You can mix these languages with left-to-right languages like English and
German, or even Russian. Features like footnotes, headers, footers,
cross-referencing, table of contents, and indexing are supported. Column
support is weak, and tables are not offered. Nisus has a powerful macro
writing language, and macros are also recordable. Nisus also supports
WorldScript II, with which you can handle Chinese, Japanese, and Korean
text.
The program comes with two separate editors: one for tables and one for
mathematical equations.

ISO 9036:1987 (ASMO 449)
Information processing -- Arabic 7-bit coded character set for information
interchange.
This is the standard adopted by the Arab Standards and Metrology
Organization (ASMO) in 1985. It is a 7-bit code, differing from ASCII
mainly by replacing the letters by the Arabic letter characters and
diacritical marks; the Arabic digits share their positions with the ASCII
digits. The positions of special and control characters in both codes are
identical. The file ISO-9036.ps at ~reader/coding-sets is a Postscript
sheet for ISO 9036.
ISO/DIS 11822
Information and documentation -- Extension of the Arabic alphabet coded
character set for bibliographic information interchange.
Unicode
is a 16-bit code. See http://unicode.org/ or http://www.stonehand.com/ for
more information about Unicode. The directory unicode and its
subdirectories at ~reader/text have also some information about unicode.

7.7.1 Remarks
Every now-and-then there are enquiries on the net regarding E-mail to a distant
country. The question is often of the type "has that country got E-mail access
?". The following table is a guide of country codes, showing the countries
which have access to Internet or general E-mail services. The country codes
have been derived from the International Organization for Standardization
standard ISO 3166. A country code is taken as a top level domain once it is
registered at rs.internic.net so not all country codes listed are top level
domains.
7.7.2 Description of codes
FI
stands for FULL INTERNET access. This includes 'telnet', 'ftp', and
internet E-mail.
stands for BITNET access although the address may be in internet DNS
(Domain Name System) format.
(Asterisk) means that the country is reachable by E-mail. If this is not
preceded by FI or B, it means that the connection may be a UUCP
connection. An asterisk is included after FI or B for consistency.
PFI
stands for a provisional full internet connection.(+)
stands for provisional connection. (+)
(+) This is used when one or more of the following is true:
o address not verified or lack of address
o UUCP dialup not active
o net connection possible but not officially announced
o premature official announcement of connection
stands for a country that is connected to Internet only via means of the
FIDOnet network. It is assumed that the FIDO connection in this case is
stable and reliable.
7.7.3 Further information column
This column contains information as follows:
* E-mail address of a contact from which further information may be
obtained and/or
* Details of a gopher system that can be queried for further information in
this case, look at Section 7.7.4 or
* If no other information available: nameserver details, if any. This is
the main nameserver as listed in the rs.internic.net database. Those often
change as the network grows, and it is hard to keep track of all
nameservers, but they should usually work. Nameservers can be queried by
users using nslookup.
7.7.4 Where to find further information
A number of sites run on-line information databases, mail-servers, and gopher
information systems where further information can be found.
gopher.psg.com
This gopher system, maintained by the Network Startup Resource Center and
PSGnet/RAINet contains perhaps the most comprehensive collection of
information about country connectivity. It may be accessed as "gopher
gopher.psg.com". For the gopher client impaired, one can telnet to
gopher.psg.com and login as gopher. An important feature is an E-mail
interface to access the information in the gopher system. Send E-mail to:
ser...@gopher.psg.com any subject, and in the body of the message:
send country/country-code

7.7.5 ISO 3166 Codes + Top level domains
WARNING:
The link to some countries marked as being connected to Internet via UUCP or
FIDO is often an expensive telephone dialup link. The people in those countries
pay dearly for every byte of information sent to them. It is therefore not
advised to send an electronic mail to a remote node in such a country asking
"how's the weather there". When it comes to money, people take things very
seriously, especially since funds are scarce. It is a matter of net etiquette
to keep this in mind. Junk mail sent to any node that has to pay a lot for its
telephone connection will clearly be dealt with HARSHLY and evasive action may
well be taken against those not respecting this notice.

The Arabic Software Map is maintained by Isam G. Ishaq
(isam...@mailszrz.zrz.TU-Berlin.DE). It is an effort to put a description of
Arabic software especially these available on the Internet. It also has
references to other resources on the Internet concerning the Arabic language
and the Arabic world.
The ASM is written in LaTeX with the ArabTeX extensions (thanks to Prof.
Lagally). It has been translated to html (Hypertext Markup Language) using the
LaTeX2HTML translator (thanks to Nikos Drakos). Using any
World-Wide-Web-Frontend (like Mosaic, netscape or lynx) you can always see an
uptodate version of it at

A more or less uptodate postscript version of this map is found on ~reader in
