comp.sys.mac.programmer.games Discussion of Macintosh Game Programming
An RFD is a Request For the Discussion of the creation of a new Usenet
newsgroup. Discussion of the formation of this group is restricted to
news.groups and should not bleed over into other groups. All
followups are (should be) set to news.groups.
SUMMARY:
Proposal for comp.sys.mac.programmer.games, a group for the discussion
of Macintosh programming issues of interest to game developers.
RATIONALE: comp.sys.mac.programmer.games
comp.sys.mac.programmer.games needs to be created because there is a
significant volume of posts throughout the comp.sys.mac.programmer.*
hierarchy and other games-related groups (such as rec.games.design
and rec.games programmer) which deal with the very specific problems
of Macintosh game developers. Game developers on the c.s.m.programmer
groups agree that a specific forum for the growing number of Macintosh
game developers would provide much-welcomed support and increase the
over-all quality of Macintosh games and entertainment products by
providing a unified forum to focus appropriate discourse.
It has been agreed that placing the group in the c.s.m.programmer.*
hierarchy is most appropriate for the content that the group will
generate. The comp.sys.mac.games.* hierarchy is also not suitable for
programming discourse. Games programming has much more to do
programming than with gaming, hence the decision to place the group in
the c.s.m.programmer.* hierarchy.
Since there is no easy way to determine the precise amount of traffic
that occurs about Macintosh games programming, people have been forced
to use imprecise means of ascertaining the amount of volume that such
a group as this would generate. It is clear that the number of topics
that would be appropriate are many (please see the Charter's list
of appropriate topics). What's more, all such traffic is currently
split among several groups: several in the c.s.m.programmer.* hierarchy,
rec.games.programmer and even some others. Counting the number of
appropriate posts and threads in all these groups together as well as
the other posts that will doubtless be encouraged by the forum's
existence in the first place will, we argue, make for more than enough
traffic to justify this group's existence.
There are no email lists handling traffic of this nature currently.
Archival of posts to this proposed group has not been arranged.
FAQs and other group-related materials will be made available on the
World Wide Web at the site of one of the proponents (Jason Newquist
has offered space) and via FTP at the usual Usenet and Macintosh FTP
sites (rtfm, info-mac, umich, etc.).
CHARTER: comp.sys.mac.programmer.games
comp.sys.mac.programmer.games is for the discussion of programming and
development issues important to Macintosh game programmers. Its purpose
is to focus discussion of Macintosh game development in a single forum.
Postings which would be considered appropriate would consist of: use
of graphics and animations, sound and music in games, game interface
issues, using the latest Apple technologies in games, game performance
issues, game AI and other algorithms, PowerPC/68k game programming/
optimization techniques, porting to and from other platforms, and
issues particular to Macintosh game design. In general, issues and
problems of Macintosh game programming and development as well as
intimately-related informational postings.
Advertisement is limited to programming and development products,
servies and events that bear reasonably on the topic of the group.
Postings which would be considered inappropriate would possibly
contain discussions about issues not directly related to game
programming. Discussions about programming issues are appropriate,
but such discussions that are not related to Macintosh game design or
programming are inappropriate.
Tangential discussions about the philosophy of computing, and general
game philosophy should be taken to more appropriate groups, such as
rec.games.programmer, which is for multi-platform game programming,
and rec.games.design which is suitable for game design issues.
More inappropriate discussions include discussions about discussions
about discussions, and any other topic than programming Macintosh
games. Finally, the posting of binaries is not suitable for this
group, being more appropriate in other locales.
END CHARTER.
PROCEDURE:
This post is being cross-posted to several groups, but follow-ups are
set to news.groups where all discussion is to take place. Discussion
will last for 30 days. Discussion of all sorts is welcomed.
At the end of this 30 day discussion period, assuming reasonable support
for the group is heard, any adjustments to the Rationale and Charter will
be made and the Call For Votes or CFV will be issued. The voting period
will last another 31 days. Details on voting will be made available in
the CFV itself.
DISTRIBUTION:
Distribution of the RFD, the CFV, several reminders of the CFV during
the voting period, and the results of the CFV will be posted to the
following groups:
comp.sys.mac.programmer.misc, comp.sys.mac.programmer.info,
comp.sys.mac.games.announce, comp.sys.mac.announce,
rec.games.programmer, news.announce.newgroups, and news.groups.
Please feel free to repost this RFD (in full, and not edited please) to
relevant mailing lists and other distribution nodes that you feel are
appropriate.

IMPORTANT VOTING PROCEDURE NOTES:
Standard Guidelines for voting apply. Only one vote per person, no
more than one vote per account. Votes must be mailed directly from
the voter to the votetaker. Anonymous, forwarded, or proxy votes
are not valid. Votes mailed by WWW/HTML/CGI forms are considered
to be anonymous votes.
Vote counting is automated. Failure to follow these directions may
mean that your vote does not get counted. If you do not receive an
acknowledgment of your vote within three days, contact the votetaker
about the problem. It's your responsibility to make sure your vote
is registered correctly. Duplicate votes are resolved in favor of
the most recent valid vote. Addresses and votes of all voters will
be published in the final voting results post.
DO NOT redistribute this CFV in any manner whatsoever. The purpose of
a Usenet vote is to determine the genuine interest of persons who would
read a proposed newsgroup. Soliciting votes from disinterested parties
defeats this purpose. Only the votetaker, the news.announce.newgroups
moderator, and the proponent (if specifically authorized by the votetaker)
are permitted to distribute copies of this CFV.
Distribution of pre-marked or otherwise modified copies of this CFV is
generally considered voting fraud and should be reported immediately to
the votetaker or the UVV <con...@uuv.org>. In cases where voting fraud
is determined to have occurred, it is standard operating procedure to
delete ALL votes submitted by the violator. When in doubt, ask the
votetaker.
DISTRIBUTION:
The only official sources for copies of this CFV are the locations listed
below and the votetaker's e-mail CFV server which can be reached at
<games-cf...@netagw.com>.
