REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
unmoderated group comp.sys.acorn.extra-cpu

Summary: Discussion of multiprocessing on Acorn computers.
Proponents: Garry <ga...@goldhill.demon.co.uk>
Joshua Goodall <j...@dcs.ed.ac.uk>

Follow-ups are directed to news.groups.

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) on the creation of a
new world-wide unmoderated Usenet newsgroup, comp.sys.acorn.extra-cpu.

Newsgroups line:
comp.sys.acorn.extra-cpu Discussion of extra CPU's in Acorn computers.

RATIONALE: comp.sys.acorn.extra-cpu

Since the release of the Acorn and Aleph 486 second processor cards
for the Risc PC, there has been a steady and large thirst for
information and problem fixes for these cards. These discussions have
been erratically posted across one or more of the existing Acorn
newsgroups. This has meant difficulties in retrieving information for
PC card users and tedium for those who do not possess one.

Many have agreed with the suggestion that it is time for a specific
CPU card newsgroup to avoid these problems. With Acorn now
developing and demonstrating replacement or additional cards for the
Risc PC range and the possibility of multiprocessing with the primary
ARM CPU itself, a more general discussion group than the previously
suggested comp.sys.acorn.pc-card is indicated.

CHARTER: comp.sys.acorn.extra-cpu

The proposed comp.sys.acorn.extra-cpu will be open to discussion on
all aspects of processor cards for the Acorn range of computers. The
scope of discussion will include setting up problems, compatibility
issues, hardware matters, multiprocessing operating systems (e.g.
TAOS) and anything else which relates to these cards. The scope of
discussion will specifically exclude matters which *solely* related
to the processor in question, which should be discussed in the
appropriate group.

END CHARTER.

PROCEDURE:

Posting of this RFD initiates a discussion period of at least 21
days. Discussion about the proposed newsgroup will take place on
news.groups ONLY, which is a newsgroup dedicated to the discussion of
new newsgroups, and anyone interested is encouraged to participate.

Also note that under the Usenet guidelines:

The RFD discussion period will last for between 21 and 30 days.

The discussion will be followed by a CFV (Call for Votes) or
a second, modified RFD.

The vote will be run by a neutral third party, probably the
Usenet Volunteer Votetakers (UVV)

This message is *not* a Call For Votes (CFV) - do not try to vote:
before the CFV is posted, or
by posting anything anywhere, or
by sending e-mail to anyone but the votetaker.

The voting procedure will be clearly described in the CFV when the
time to vote arrives. Now is NOT the time to vote.

DISTRIBUTION:

The complete official messages - RFD, CFV and vote results - will be
posted to these newsgroups:

news.announce.newgroups, news.groups,
comp.sys.acorn.advocacy, comp.sys.acorn.announce,
comp.sys.acorn.apps, comp.sys.acorn.games,
comp.sys.acorn.hardware, comp.sys.acorn.misc.
comp.sys.acorn.networking, comp.sys.acorn.programmer

This vote is being conducted by a neutral third party. Questions
about the proposed group should be directed to the proponent.

HOW TO VOTE:

Send E-MAIL (posts to a newsgroup are not votes) to:

vot...@ntrs.com

Replying to this article should work, but check the address before you mail
your vote. Your mail message must contain one and only one of the following
vote statements for each group:

I vote YES on comp.sys.acorn.extra-cpu
I vote NO on comp.sys.acorn.extra-cpu

Names are required for this vote. The counting software will extract your name
from the mail message if your mailer is properly configured; if your mail
software does not indicate your name, you must include the following statement:

Voter name: Your name here

You can also vote ABSTAIN or CANCEL. These votes are not counted in the
results, and CANCEL removes your name from the vote listing in the result.

Vote counting is automated. Failure to follow these directions may mean that
your vote does not get counted. If you do not receive an acknowledgment of
your vote within three days contact the votetaker about the problem. IT'S YOUR
RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE YOUR VOTE IS REGISTERED CORRECTLY.

If you wish to change your vote, simply vote again from the same account;
duplicate votes are resolved in favor of the most recent vote.

THIS IS NOT A SECRET VOTE. Names, addresses, and votes will be published in
a RESULTS article in the same newsgroups in which this CFV appears.

The purpose of a Usenet vote is to determine if there is sufficient interest in
the Usenet community to create a new newsgroup. Soliciting votes from
disinterested parties defeats this purpose. Please do not distribute this CFV;
direct people to the CFV in news.announce.newgroups. Distributing pre-marked
or edited copies of this CFV is prohibited, and votes from such sources will be
removed from the final vote total.

Standard Guidelines for voting apply. One person, one vote. Votes must be
mailed directly from the voter to the votetaker. Anonymous, forwarded or proxy
votes are not valid. Votes mailed by WWW servers are considered to be
anonymous votes.
