Old, stuck articles

We've had a problem for the last month with our news feed
which only yesterday got resolved. ITMT, I have a large
number of messages from the end of October and the middle
of December that, for reasons unknown, are not getting
expired. At sometime in the past I cobbled together a
find listing with a DOS based C program to generate
a delete and renumber script. However, I've lost that
avenue.

I'm also seeing something like the following appearing
near the end of the expire.daily:

Can't store key, Error 0
Expire errors:history files not updated.
Articles lines processed 824224
Articles retained 0
Entries expired 824224
Files unlinked 1181484
Old entries dropped 331706
Old entries retained 0

Because of the message regarding history
files I ran fixhist but the figures above
are pretty much the same day after day.

I'm looking for a means to purge the outdated
articles automatically. Is there any available
script for this? Any other means that doesn't
require days of tedious manual work?

See the INN FAQ, question 7.41. And/or upgrade to 1.5.1.
