by now, everyone realizes that udp or depeering of Google Groups is
simply not going to happen; so the only solution is for unmoderated
newsgroup subscribers to continue filtering out "googlegroups.com"
message-id and reference headers from their favorite news readers;
discussions among news server administrators in news.admin.peering,
news.admin.net-abuse.usenet, news.software.nntp, and other related
forums suggest that mercantile/commercial interests support Google

not getting the sense of "going" anywhere ... no place to go but earth,
which last I looked is down below, so the correct answer must be "down",
'Going Down' like the song says (Jeff Beck did a great version in 1972)

"fr.soc.politique" could be no.1 for googlegroups.com en masse . . . don't
know about gg stats for big 8 (comp/humanities/news/misc/rec/sci/soc/talk),
but obviously alt groups are getting the treatment from the powers that be,
so even if gg were to go away, something worse would surely take its place

It's the best solution, I think. Let's give the users power to decide for
themselves. If Google posters find that nobody responds to their posts,
they'll figure a way to use a normal newsserver, but I don't want to force
my users to be part of this campaign.

Most of them use Usenet long enough to know how to use killfile.

> discussions among news server administrators in news.admin.peering,

I don't think the interest is commercial. Most servers nowadays are run by
volunteers and provided for free, because they (we) just like Usenet and
want to keep it running (and can afford the -- relatively small -- costs
of keeping and maintaining the infrastructure).

There are exceptions, but I think they're rare.

I wouldn't shed a tear if Google stopped providing its service, but I
won't depeer it on my server as long as valid posters use it. It wouldn't
be fair to my users.

surely more power to everyone who runs and supports real newsgroup servers;
there is an old dial soap tv commercial that said "aren't you glad you use
dial? ...don't you wish everybody did?" (google should clean up their act)

The problem is that probably most (American anyway) nntp server admins actually
do remember that commercial. We're not getting younger, and Usenet may eventually
go with us (text Usenet, that is).

The problem is different -- whether we want to start a crusade against
Google Groups at the expense of our users.

I don't, but every newsadmin is free to make their own decisions.

Sure. And way too many Gmail accounts are used for sending e-mail spam too.
Yet many e-mail server administrators still don't blacklist *all* mails coming
from Gmail servers, because doing so (although it certainly has many benefits!)
would do more harm to their users than benefits.

The same principle applies here.

In short, easiest way out isn't always the best one (at least it is not the best
solution for *everyone*)

Users don't want that. Plain and simple.

Don't worry. Sooner or later Google Groups will die on their own.
