I recently mentioned some problems with posts to sci.physics.research.
Some test messages in response to that post a couple of days ago did get
through.

Today, I sent out some test messages myself. Verdict: NO messages got
through, neither to the posting address nor to the request address
@moderator.isc.org.

Both worked in the past.

Messages to the addresses @moderators.isc.org should get forwarded to
the corresponding addresses @astro.multivax.de. (From there, messages
sent to the posts address go to one active moderator; those to the
request address go to all active moderators.)

Historically, the posts address was sci-physics-research and the request
address was physics-research-request. I also support physics-research
and sci-physics-research-request.

Again, no messages to addresses @moderators.isc.org got through, and all
to astro.multivax.de got through, so the problem is not at my end.

I did get two bounces, which I expected, namely to
sci-physics-research-request and physics-research @moderators.isc.org.
However, messages to sci-physics-research and physics-research-request
@moderators.isc.org, i.e. to the official addresses which have been
working for years, NEITHER GOT THROUGH NOR GENERATED A BOUNCE. Since I
got the other two bounces, it is clear that I can receive bounces from
moderators.isc.org.

Can someone check this out? It seems that the problem is relaying
messages from moderators.isc.org to the corresponding addresses
@astro.multivax.de.

Feel free to send test messages to any of the above addresses and
indicate whether you would like a reply.

More test messages. Request address does not work; email to it bounces.
Posts address: Works at least some of the time.

I sent a test message about 3 hours ago, asking for a reply. So far I
have received neither a bounce nor a reply, so it appears to me that
there is a problem.

This jibes with my impression after some more tests WITH REGARD TO THE
REQUEST ADDRESS. One of the moderators got and replied to your message
to <sci-physic...@moderators.isc.org>. The posts address seems
to be working again. I think there WAS a problem with it, but only
temporarily (not sure if it is related to the other problem). However,
it did alert us to the problem with the request address, which is
definitely real and has been around for at least a week or so.

Test posts to <sci-physic...@moderators.isc.org> apparently went
through moderators.individual.net, xvm-90.mit.edu and
moderators.schnuerpel.eu.

If you haven't already, send a test message to
physics-rese...@moderators.isc.org and see if you get a reply
from us moderators or a bounce.

Again, the addresses @astro.multivax.de, to which messages to the
corresponding addresses @moderators.isc.org should be forwarded, are
definitely working.

I'm sorry, I've been a little slow in understanding the problem. Since
physics.research.request is not a newsgroup, I would not expect the
corresponding address <physics-rese...@moderators.isc.org> to
be relayed to the <physics-rese...@astro.multivax.de> address.
To the best of my knowledge, the moderation relays only relay posts to
the submission addresses. Do you know for certain that
<physics-rese...@moderators.isc.org> has worked at some time in
the past? I believe that it is not supposed to work.

I have not previously attempted to send a test message to
<physics-rese...@moderators.isc.org>; I will do so now in a
separate email and let you know if I receive a bounce, but I expect it
will not be delivered.

I sent a test to that address and received a bounce message, "User
unknown." I believe the moderation relays normally do not relay
messages to the moderator contact addresses, only to the submission
addresses.

If I am mistaken about that, however, the remedy would be to send an
email to <moderator...@isc.org>. This address goes to humans who
handle requests manually, so no special formatting is required. It
should be sent from the moderation address of record, which in this case
is probably <physics-rese...@astro.multivax.de>.

sometimes a bit slow

Hi all,

Thanks for the test messages and so on.

It seems there was (is?) an intermittent problem with one of the relays
which forward posts. Normally a mail client should retry, but I suppose
it is possible that some don't and get a hard error when they shouldn't.
This led to some test messages, which revealed that something didn't
work which I thought should but in fact never did. It seems that the
addresses @moderators.isc.org are only for posts (which somehow get
directed to one active moderator; for sci.physics.research, I handle
this), not for "requests" (intended for all active moderators).

Thanks again,

Phillip
