I recently saw mention of some great discussions in
net.subculture.usenet. I was able to read some of them from the
archive.org Usenet archives and I was surprised to see that the isc list
still contains groups in the net.* hierarchy.

I thought all of the newsgroups in that hierarchy went away after the
great renaming like to many others or converted to big-7 groups.
Obviously I was wrong. I would like to know, out of curiosity, if anyone
is responsible for that hierarchy or if it has been abandoned.

OIC. I didn't realize that's what that was. That's very interesting.

Hi Jason,

The control.ctl entry for net.* should be updated BTW. These two URL do
not seem relevant any longer:
URL: http://www.usenet2.org/
Key URL: http://www.usenet2.org/con...@usenet2.org.asc

Does anyone happen to know if there is still a web site to refer to?

In control.ctl, net.* has historic state, "almost entirely abandoned".
Maybe it is now totally abandoned?

They disappeared about 10 years ago.

I don't think so.

Thanks for the pointer, I've just read that page I did not know. It
indeed gives more background about Usenet II. Pretty interesting for
historic purpose.
Yet, it was not exactly what I was looking for; this is more a FAQ and
how to configure a news server to carry Usenet II than an official homepage.
It appears from discussions in this thread that such a homepage no
longer exists. RIP.

Yeah, Usenet II was a failed experiment. It was active for a while, but
everyone slowly went elsewhere, mostly to another private hierarchy with
less ambitious goals and a much smaller number of peering news servers.

I've updated control.ctl to remove the legacy control information and make
it clearer that no one is using the hierarchy any more.

That's sad. It seemed like an interesting project. The archives of net
hierarchy that I've been reading are here if anyone is interested:
https://archive.org/download/usenet-net

I think that's not the net.* from Usenet II, but the (older) net.*
from before the Great Renaming. Those groups became the Big7 (later
Big8), so net.* had been re-purposed later on for Usenet II.

It's both. I had been reading net.subculture.usenet which is a Usenet II
newsgroup.

Ah, good to know. I'll have a look, then, again.
