This is the fellowship I did last fall, and the deadline for this coming fall for journalists is April 2. There were ten of us with IRP September-November, and most of us were freelancers.

Saudi Arabia Trip and IRP Reporting Fellowships Deadlines: March 16 and April 2

Apply for IRP's Trip to Saudi Arabia by March 16

If you're a senior U.S. editor or producer interested in learning more about Saudi Arabia, we invite you to apply for our Gatekeeper Editors Trip on May 5-18, 2012.

The trip will focus on issues such as energy, religion, environment, education and women's issues. We will look at some of the unique public health issues the country faces, including in its role as host to the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. We will also explore how this country of 26 million is responding to widespread changes in the region.

Learn more and apply for the trip by Friday, March 16, 2012.

Apply for Global Religion Reporting Fellowships by April 2

MeskelIRP is also offering nine-week fellowships for reporters interested in international religion topics. Up to four reporting fellowships will be awarded for fall 2012 to U.S. journalists with proposals on important global religion stories--no matter where in the world they might be or no matter what religion(s) they are about.

Learn more and apply for a fellowship by Monday, April 2.

Just Announced: IRP to Screen "Bhopali" Film

On Thursday, March 22, IRP will host three film screenings as part of the DC Environmental Film Festival. "Bhopali," a full-length documentary about the worst industrial disaster ever recorded, will be screened along with two short films, produced by IRP, covering corporate social responsibility.

The event, which is open to the public, will feature introductions of the works by the filmmakers and opening remarks by John Schidlovsky, the director of IRP.

Date: Thursday, March 22, 2012
Time: 6:30 pm
Location: Kenney Auditorium, 1740 Massachusetts Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20036
Price: Free

The Films:

"Bhopali," directed and produced by Van Maximilian Carlson, gives voice to the victims of the world's worst industrial disaster--the 1984 Union Carbide Corporation toxic gas leak in Bhopal, India, that killed 20,000 people and injured 100,000--and examines the lasting effects of the disaster on the region.

"Has Firestone Liberia Gone Far Enough?" was filmed by Ed Robbins, a freelance documentary photographer, during the IRP Gatekeeper Editors trip to Liberia in 2010. The film examines the environmental, labor and political impact of Firestone's sprawling Liberian rubber plantation.

"Indonesia's Palm Oil Dilemma" was filmed by Jacob Templin of TIME.com during the IRP Gatekeeper Editors trip to Indonesia in 2011 and examines the controversial role of large agricultural firms in rural Indonesia.

Light refreshments will be served.

The Launch Pad Astronomy Workshop for Writers, at the University of Wyoming in Laramie:

They're funded by the National Science Foundation now, though NASA gave them funding for the first few years. They're taking applications March 1-31. My (brief) article about the program is in the current issue of "The Writer" magazine.
