Subject: Opening for Global Health Reporter/Africa at PRI's The World
Date: June 20, 2012 11:56:35 AM PDT

PRI's The World has just posted an opening for a full-time Africa-based global health reporter. They're looking for an energetic, creative radio journalist who is passionate about health and development issues, excited to live in Africa, and eager to explore multimedia storytelling possibilities.

Global Health & Development Reporter (Africa), The World
Department Overview: The World is a one-hour, nationally distributed weekday radio public affairs program co-produced by WGBH, the BBC World Service, and Public Radio International (PRI). The show offers a mix of news, features, interviews, and music from around the globe, developed specifically for an American audience. The World’s companion website, theworld.org, offers a similar mix of news and features along with slideshows, videos, blog posts, podcasts, and interactive graphics that expand on the radio content. The World and theworld.org use social media and other relevant tools to maximize user engagement and enhance the user experience.

Position Overview: Under the supervision of The World’s Health & Science Editor, the Global Health & Development Reporter will research, record, write, and narrate audio stories (for the radio) and video stories (for the Web) that bring to life the challenges faced by impoverished people in developing countries, especially in Africa, and that explore efforts to help these populations. The Reporter will occasionally produce breaking radio news stories, but the bulk of his/her reporting will be feature stories that focus on health, education, economic, and human rights issues confronted by poor people in poor nations. The Reporter will contribute blog posts to theworld.org and use social media to enhance the impact of his/her stories. The Reporter will be based in Africa (the exact location to be determined) and will travel on assignment to other parts of the continent.

Requirements: The successful candidate must have a minimum of 3 years' experience in radio journalism and must exhibit some experience producing Web videos and/or slideshows. The candidate must have strong writing, voicing, recording, and digital editing skills; be self-motivated and capable of independent work and travel; be proficient at juggling multiple assignments; and work well in a collaborative environment. The candidate must be an excellent storyteller with an ability to flesh out characters, build drama, and weave a strong narrative into a short package. Experience working or living in a developing country (especially in Africa) is strongly preferred, as is a background in reporting on health and development issues. An interest and background in children’s issues is a plus. A bachelor’s degree is required. Some fluency in a second language common in Africa (e.g. French, Swahili) is a plus.

The full listing, along with a link to apply, can be found at http://www.wgbh.org/about/employmentOpportunities.cfm. (The job is listed simply as World Reporter.) The online listing makes it look like a one-year position, but they have funding for two years and hope the job will continue beyond that.

PRI's The World is a one-hour daily newsmagazine broadcast on over 300 public radio stations across the U.S. and Canada. They're co-produced by the BBC World Service and reach a weekly audience of 2.5 million.
