Yeah, what gives? Now it's "Trollycar Sandwiches!"
Sounds like something that should be in San Francisco.
Are the same people running the place, or has management
changed?

Seems pretty much the same as before the name changed... a bit pricey,
good sandwiches, slow service. But if you ask for a glass of water,
it's 95 cents! and they don't even serve Barq's.

My IMHO bottom line: They've priced themselves out of the local market.

I disagree. The sandwich I had was on bread so dry, it was hard. And
worse, they took out the hot sauce rack. All you had was one (small)
bottle of Tabasco. ANd the selection was not as wide as at Streetcar.

Anybody mind explaining exactly what they've done to Streetcar
Sandwiches? I've followed the discussion on the group from my alum
account, but it's not clear what's happened. Would be a shame if it's
declined; I really enjoyed their stuff.

Thanks,
-John

They lost their lease because apparently the owner of the building thought
that he could do a better job. Even though the menu appears to be roughly
the same, it isn't owned or run by the same people anymore.

I didn't think it was all that great before.

Well, it's clear that he's pretty much a dolt who isn't from here. After all,
who actually names a place "Trolley" when it's right on the streetcar line?!"

Cheers,
Ed.

I've decided that, for the sake of "tulane.general", I will dine at
"Trolleycar Sandwiches" this evening. My former favorite sandwich
there was the honey/mustard chicken, which my girlfriend tried, and
said was horrible now. I'm going to try the roast beef, which
Streetcar never seemed to be able to get right. Like you said, way
too much lettuce, and I always thought there was too much mayo also.

I'll be reporting back shortly. I would like to point out that while
I did really like Streetcar while it was around, they were one of the
many business that *REALLY* pissed me off by raising their prices and
changing their menu every Mardi Gras.

Is "Trolleycar (?!?) Sandwiches" owned by the same people who own Beebo's
Deli? I noticed that the Woody's Chicken of old is now "Beebo's
Chicken". Are they owners of the store, or do they just get their
chicken from Beebo's now?

I tried the "Fireball Shrimp" po-boy (formerly the "FireCRACKER shrimp")
and it was actually much better...more mayo, less lettuce (Streetcar
always had way too much lettuce), jalapenos (not included on the old
version), and more and better shrimp (more cheese/jalapeno stuffing, more
bacon). Good old artery-hardening stuff...and the price was about the same.

From reading the rest of this thread, it sounds like I just got lucky. I
hope the rest isn't really THAT bad...

Anyway, here's my review of the roast beef:

IMHO, any po-boy place should be able to do a roast beef po-boy well.
I view it as the "benchmark" of any po-boy place. The roast beef
po-boy at "Trolleycar" started out OK -- just enough mayo, correct
amounts and proportions of lettuce and tomato, and *GREAT* french bread
which tasted like it had been toasted lightly (a major plus in my
book). Also, the thing was *HUGE* for the price ($4.50) -- it must've
been about 11 or 12 inches.

Unfortunately, after about two bites, I noticed something wasn't quite
right, and I figured out that their roast beef was *HORRIBLY* bland.
It tasted almost as though it was beef that they just chucked into the
oven until it was done -- no seasoning, no nuthin'. Don't get me
wrong -- it was tender and juicy and cooked just right, but it wasn't
flavorful at all.

I'd give it ** out of *****. For reference:

Mandina's: ****1/2*
Mother's: ***1/2*
Domilise's: ***

And, the only ***** roast beef po-boy I've ever had was:

Miss Zelda's all-debris roast beef at the Newman cafeteria. Sadly,
Miss Zelda is no longer there. Oh well.
