Hi all!

I will be visiting New Orleans (from New York) around March 20th. I
really do not want to stay in Sheratons/Mariotts/etc. since they run
pretty high.

I know if one tried to book a room in NYC remotely, they could not
hget a rate below say.. $100. But I know plenty of cheap hotels just
outside the city (5-10 miles) that can be very cheap - like $50 or
even less. Clean too. (but do not expect breakfast in bed, etc.)

I was wondering - is something like this also true for New Orleans
area? I will have a car while in LA, so I do not mind staying in hotel
5-15 miles outside of New Orleans.

I was just wondering if any such hotels are in the area. Like Super 8
Motel, etc...

Please let me know if I am being reasonable.

Plenty of them available. There are some that are reasonably nice
for as little as $40 a night.

Check out http://www.neworleans.com/hotel.html

If you don't mind the drive, Metairie has some fine inexpensive Motels.
For instance, it is about 9 miles from the Metairie Ramada to Jackson
Square in the French Quarter.

If you are just looking for a "place to sleep," then Metairie or the
Airport area is just fine. Avoid New Orleans East or Airline Highway,
though, IMHO.

Yea, there are such places. Try the following:

TravelZoo:

La Quita

Holiday Inn

IDORAN--

It sort of depends on what you are interested in when you visit. If you
want to see the French Quarter, and are not so interested in the
surrounding area, then you might do just as well with a small hotel in the
quarter or on St. Charles (streetcar runs right by). Do a search also for
"guesthouse" and/or B&B, as there have been several new ones started even
in the last few months.

Best of luck

A good source for inexpensive rooms may be found at
http://www.priceline.com
At this site YOU tell them how much YOU want to pay for a room and THEY
match you up with a nice room for THAT price. If it's the first time
that you've used them you will get your first night for FREE. This is
VERY popular in Florida and the eastern seaboard at the moment.
They also do cruises, auto rentals, meals, airlines, etc. GOOD LUCK (and
tell em NONG sent you <g>)
